Job Description
Parsons is looking for an amazingly talented Principal BIM Electrical Designer to join our team! In this role you will get to design electrical systems for complex US Government facilities.
Position Overview
The Principal BIM Electrical Designer is responsible for leading the electrical modeling and documentation efforts for building and infrastructure projects using Autodesk Revit and related BIM tools. This role combines advanced technical expertise in electrical systems design (power, lighting, low-voltage, and specialty systems) with strong BIM coordination skills to deliver accurate, constructible, and well-coordinated design documents across all project phases.
The Principal BIM Electrical Designer will work closely with electrical engineers, other discipline designers, BIM managers/Digital Delivery Specialists, and Design managers to develop high-quality, clash-free 3D models and 2D documentation that meet project requirements, codes, client standards, and internal BIM standards.
What You'll Be Doing
- Develop, manage, and maintain detailed Revit models for electrical systems, including:
- Power distribution (normal and emergency)
- Lighting and lighting controls
- Data/telecom and low-voltage systems
- Grounding, bonding, and other specialty systems as required
- Prepare construction documents from the BIM model, including plans, sections, elevations, details, schedules, and diagrams.
- Lead model coordination with other disciplines (architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, civil) to identify and resolve clashes, maintain clear pathways, and optimize system routing.
- Implement and enforce BIM execution plans, project templates, and modeling standards in accordance with company and client requirements.
- Support and guide junior designers and drafters in Revit modeling best practices, families usage, and drawing production.
- Collaborate with engineers to translate design concepts, single-line diagrams, and markups into accurate and constructible BIM models.
- Perform quality control checks on models and drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with codes and standards.
- Participate in coordination meetings, model review sessions, and design workshops (virtual or in-person) as the electrical BIM representative.
- Create and customize Revit families, schedules, and views for project-specific needs while maintaining consistency with the corporate content library.
- Support quantity take-offs, equipment schedules, and modeling-based analyses (e.g., space/clearance checks) as needed.
- Maintain organized model structures, worksets, and file management procedures to ensure efficient collaboration within multi-user Revit environments.
- Assist with implementation of new BIM tools, workflows, and automation (e.g., Dynamo scripts, add-ins) where applicable.
- Stay current with Revit, BIM, and electrical design technology and recommend improvements to workflows and standards.
- Coordinate with distributed teams across multiple time zones as required.
- Support occasional site visits for field verification, as-built modeling, and coordination with construction teams (as required).
What Required Skills You'll Bring
Education & Experience
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology, Drafting/Design Technology, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Typically 10+ years of progressive experience in electrical design for buildings or infrastructure projects.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on Revit MEP/BIM experience focused on electrical systems.
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit (MEP) for electrical modeling and documentation in a multi-discipline environment.
- Strong understanding of building electrical systems and symbols, including:
- Low and medium-voltage power distribution
- Lighting and lighting controls
- Communication, security, and other low-voltage systems
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IBC, NFPA, local codes).
- Experience working in a Common Data Environment (CDE) and with model sharing workflows (e.g., BIM 360 / ACC or similar).
- Proficiency in Navisworks or similar tools for clash detection and coordination reviews.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD and other BIM/CAD tools.
Core Competencies
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality deliverables.
- Ability to interpret engineering sketches, diagrams, and specifications and convert them into accurate BIM content.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Effective communication skills (verbal and written) with ability to collaborate across disciplines and locations.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and support junior team members.
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to anticipate and resolve coordination issues early in the design process.
What Desired Skills You'll Bring
- Professional certifications such as:
- Autodesk Certified Professional: Revit (MEP or Electrical)
- NICET or similar discipline-related certifications
- Knowledge of NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and its practical application in building and infrastructure projects.
- Experience developing and maintaining Revit content libraries and standards.
- Experience with Dynamo, Revit add-ins, or other automation tools to streamline modeling and documentation.
- Ability to produce photometric calculations utilizing tools such as Elum Tools and AGi32.
- Experience in design-build or EPC project environments.
- Familiarity with BIM and CAD standards, e.g. US National CAD Standards.
- Prior experience supporting large, complex, multi-office or multi-firm project teams.
- Experience participating in value engineering, constructability reviews, or coordination with contractors.
