Purpose:

As a strategic partner to data and analytics teams across the Bank, the Principal Data Engineer will lead efforts to modernize the Bank’s data and analytics environment, shaping how data is designed, integrated, and leveraged to deliver enterprise-wide insights. This role will drive the evolution of scalable data architecture and engineering practices that enable consistency, performance, and governance across platforms.

The Principal Data Engineer will collaborate closely with business and technology partners to co-develop standards, patterns, and frameworks that support the Bank’s data modernization roadmap. Through mentorship, solution alignment, and hands-on enablement, this role will foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and shared accountability in how data is managed and utilized. Ultimately, the Principal Data Engineer will help position the Bank’s data platform as a strategic asset that powers data-driven decision-making and operational excellence.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Architectural Leadership

    • Define and implement scalable architectural patterns for solutions built in Microsoft Fabric.

    • Ensure alignment of implemented solutions with established patterns and best practices.

  • Governance and Best Practices

    • Develop and promote standards for building robust, secure, and efficient solutions in Microsoft Fabric.

    • Champion data governance and performance optimization across Microsoft Fabric implementations.

    • Drive data quality initiatives to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability of enterprise data across Microsoft Fabric.

  • Enablement & Mentorship

    • Coach and mentor Bank staff to effectively leverage Microsoft Fabric for analytic solutions.

    • Partner with business leaders, IT teams, data engineers, analysts, and stakeholders to identify data and analytics needs and act as a strategic advisor in achieving business goals.

  • Platform Expertise & Integration

    • Lead the implementation of the enterprise data strategy using Microsoft Fabric tools.

    • Oversee integration of Azure and on-prem technologies with data & analytic solutions in Microsoft Fabric.

    • Guide real-time intelligence and streaming data ingestion strategies.

  • Emerging Technologies

    • Stay informed on Microsoft Fabric advancements and other industry trends to identify opportunities for innovation in data and analytics.

    • Integrate AI/ML capabilities into analytics platforms for predictive and prescriptive insights.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field (Master’s preferred).

  • 8+ years of experience in data architecture, analytics, or data strategy roles.

  • Programming Languages: SQL, Python, PySpark, Kusto Query Language (KQL)

  • Experience designing and implementing enterprise solutions with Microsoft Fabric components: Power BI, Lakehouse, Warehouse, PySpark Notebooks, Data Factory, and Purview.

  • Expert SQL skills and experience with data modeling and database design.

  • Proven experience on ETL/ELT design & architecture.

  • Familiarity with Azure-based data platforms for data storage and processing

  • Solid understanding of relevant data governance, data quality, and data security best practices

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels and experience working closely with cross-functional product teams.

  • Proven ability to train and mentor non-technical users in data analytics and citizen development.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to think critically and analytically.

  • Ability to perform multiple diverse tasks simultaneously and under pressure to meet deadlines, prioritize multiple demands and identify/solve problems creatively. Must maintain confidentiality.

  • The ability to work independently within a fast-paced environment.

  • Must not have been convicted of any civil or criminal charge that would suggest a risk to Bank security.

  • Ability to work full-time in a hybrid-work environment.

  • Ability to uphold and model the Bank’s Guiding Principles.

Hiring Range: $140,000 - $165,000

Hiring ranges reflect the base salary that the Bank reasonably expects to pay for a given role and is not inclusive of annual incentive award opportunities, retirement benefits or the value of other health and welfare or other ancillary benefits. We consider many factors when determining base salaries such as individual background and experience, the competitive environment, education, particular skill set(s), and industry and institutional knowledge.
