Press Brake Operator

Job Description:

Duties and Responsibilities 

Machine Setup & Orientation:

  • Set up and adjust press brake machines for each job, including tooling selection, angle calculations, and back gauge adjustments.
  • Operate press brakes safely and efficiently to bend sheet metal according to blueprints, work orders, and job travelers.
  • Perform test bends and first-piece inspections to ensure accuracy before running production.

Quality Control:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine correct bend sequences.
  • Use calipers, protractors, and other measuring tools to verify bend angles, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Identify and correct defects such as overbending, under bending, and warping to maintain quality standards.

Material Handling & Workflow:

  • Load, position, and secure sheet metal materials onto the press brake using hoists or by hand.
  • Work closely with other team members to ensure smooth workflow and avoid production bottlenecks.
  • Keep workstations clean and organized to maintain efficiency and safety.

Equipment Maintenance & Safety:

  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on press brake machines, including lubrication and tooling inspections.
  • Follow all shop safety protocols, including PPE requirements and safe material handling practices.
  • Report any machine malfunctions or safety concerns to the supervisor immediately.

Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Technical training in metal fabrication or machining is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and job travelers.
  • Proficiency in using measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and protractors.
  • Basic understanding of metal properties and bend allowances.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to make real-time adjustments.

Experience

  • 1-3 years of experience operating a press brake or similar metal fabrication equipment.
  • Familiarity with CNC press brakes (AMADA, Trumpf, Bystronic, etc.) is preferred but not required.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and handling of sheet metal.
  • Comfort working in a shop environment with noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
