Job Family Definition:

Responsible for architecting solutions that will achieve customer business outcomes either within a specific technical domain, or across the broader company portfolio (hardware, software, services, and as a service offerings) in combination with all necessary third-party components (e.g. software and integration). Develops and articulates compelling, accurate, and relevant proposals and ensures customer's business and technical requirements are met. Can be aligned to a specific area of technical expertise (e.g., products, solutions, services). Provides technical expertise to sales teams and customers (through sales presentations, product/solution demonstrations, etc.) aimed at gaining the customer mindshare within their domain. These jobs focus on technical selling to customers/partners. May be aligned to specific accounts based on business priority.

Management Level Definition:

Contributions impact technical components of HPE products, solutions, or services regularly and sustainable. Applies advanced subject matter knowledge to solve complex business issues and is regarded as a subject matter expert. Provides expertise and partnership to functional and technical project teams and may participate in cross-functional initiatives. Exercises significant independent judgment to determine best method for achieving objectives. May provide team leadership and mentoring to others.

Role Summary

The Senior HVAC Designer – Data Centers (Design + Pre-Sales) plays a dual role combining deep technical HVAC expertise for mission-critical data centers with customer-facing pre-sales and solution-shaping capabilities. The role supports large and complex pursuits, working closely with sales, business development, and delivery teams to design optimized, scalable, and commercially competitive cooling solutions.

What you’ll do:

Responsibilities:

Technical Design Leadership

  • Lead HVAC system design for Tier II, Tier III, and Tier IV data centers
  • Develop conceptual, basic, and detailed HVAC designs including:
  • Chilled water and DX-based cooling systems
  • CRAH / CRAC units, in-row and rear-door cooling
  • Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers
  • Hot aisle / cold aisle containment solutions
  • Chilled water distribution network
  • Liquid cooling system
  • Design for high-density and AI/GPU workloads (30–100+ kW per rack)
  • Perform cooling load calculations, airflow analysis, and redundancy planning (N, N+1, 2N)
  • Perform CFD analysis on proposed design
  • Prepare HVAC layouts, schematics, P&IDs, equipment schedules, and BOQs

Pre-Sales & Solutioning

  • Act as HVAC SME during pre-sales, RFP/RFQ, and bid phases
  • Work closely with sales and business teams to:
  • Understand customer business drivers, SLAs, and growth plans
  • Translate requirements into value-based technical solutions
  • Develop concept designs, budgetary estimates, and technical narratives
  • Participate in customer presentations, technical workshops, and design workshops
  • Support techno-commercial evaluations and vendor/OEM selection
  • Drive value engineering to optimize CAPEX and OPEX while maintaining reliability

Standards, Compliance & Sustainability

  • Ensure compliance with:
  • ASHRAE (TC 9.9)
  • Uptime Institute guidelines
  • NFPA, ISHRAE, SMACNA
  • Local codes and statutory requirements
  • Incorporate energy-efficient and sustainable design practices (PUE, WUE optimization)
  • Support green data center and ESG-aligned initiatives

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Coordinate with Electrical, IT, Fire Protection, BMS, Civil, and Structural teams
  • Interface with OEMs, EPC partners, consultants, PMCs, and clients
  • Visit project sites to resolve implementation related queries and evaluate execution quality.
  • Guide project team for SAT and Uptime/TIA Testing procedures.
  • Support delivery teams during design handover, construction, and commissioning

Tools & Documentation

  • Proficiency in:
  • AutoCAD / Revit (MEP)
  • HVAC simulation tools (HAP, TRACE, IES, E20)
  • Prepare design reports, basis of design (BoD), technical specifications, and tender documents
  • Review vendor submittals, shop drawings, and technical deviations

What you need to bring:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
  • 12+ years of HVAC design experience with minimum 5+ years in data centers
  • Exposure to customer-facing pre-sales or solution consulting roles

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong expertise in mission-critical HVAC and cooling architectures
  • Proven ability to articulate technical solutions in business language
  • Commercial awareness of CAPEX, OPEX, lifecycle costing, and TCO
  • Excellent presentation, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to influence solution decisions and support deal closure

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in hyperscale, colocation, BFSI, or cloud service provider data centers
  • Exposure to AI-ready, HPC, or liquid-cooled environments
  • Experience working with global OEMs, EPCs, and IT infrastructure providers
