Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a highly skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the Applied Materials Division (AMD). In this position the successful candidate will conduct applied research to develop sustainable innovative technologies to improve the efficiency of resource and energy utilization; to increase our economic competitiveness; and to enhance our national security.
The successful candidate should have expertise and experience in process modeling, techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle analysis (LCA) of lithium-ion batteries and/or recycling and resources to products. The candidate should have a good understanding of battery recycling technologies, sources and production technologies of battery materials, and/or 2nd life applications of batteries and conversion of waste streams to products. An understanding of process scale-up and chemical plant design is of importance as well. The candidate should be familiar with databases and analytical models relevant to process simulation, TEA and LCA, and have a good knowledge of current and future resource recovery and separation technologies. The successful candidate will 1) collect data pertaining to battery recycling, battery materials production, and battery 2nd life, and a wide range of resource recovery applications from open literature and databases, as well as through communications with industries, government agencies, and other collaborators for the development and optimization of experimental process; 2) analyze collected data with Argonne’s EverBatt model to estimate associated cost and environmental impacts; 3) write reports and journal articles to document research findings; 4) Expand, update, and maintain EverBatt; and 5) provide analytical support to Argonne’s ReCell Center.
Position Requirements
Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically completed within the last 0-5 years) in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or similar degree.
Experience with data collection, processing, analysis, and presentation
Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel and good computer programming skills
Knowledge of techno-economic analysis and life cycle analysis
Experience working with Argonne’s EverBatt model, GREET model, and BatPaC model
Understanding of resource recovery technologies, supply chain analysis and upstream and downstream processes
Knowledge of Aspen Plus or other chemical process simulation software.
Ability to work well within a team of experts in various areas of expertise
Skilled in oral and written communications with peers, colleagues, and collaborators.
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
This position requires an on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois, depending on project needs.
