Position Overview: 

The Portfolio Manager is responsible for overseeing a portfolio of technology initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic business goals, optimizing resource allocation, and driving value delivery. This role bridges technical execution with business strategy, working across cybersecurity, product, and operations teams to manage complex, cross-functional programs. With strong analytical expertise and communication skills, the Portfolio Manager creates data-driven insights to articulate portfolio value and status, enabling strategic decision-making and performance optimization. By providing executive updates, they play a crucial role in keeping senior leadership informed, facilitating informed decisions, strategic guidance, and alignment with organizational objectives. The role requires the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, continuously evolving environment, supporting IT executives, peers, and business stakeholders in implementing data-driven planning, decision-making, and project execution processes across key initiatives. 

Lead Portfolio Governance:  

  • Establish and enforce project approval processes and guidelines.  

  • Prioritize projects based on strategic objectives, resource availability, and business impact.  

  • Oversee portfolio governance to ensure strategic alignment, risk mitigation, and value delivery. 

  • Monitor portfolio performance and compliance, leveraging data-driven insights to guide corrective actions, optimize execution, and uphold enterprise standards. 

Objectives & Key Results (OKR) Tracking:  

  • Evaluate portfolio performance against key metrics and benchmarks, identifying areas of strength and improvement. 

  • Develop and implement a system for tracking and reporting on objectives and key results. 

  • Monitor progress towards OKRs and provide regular updates to stakeholders.  

  • Identify any deviations from set objectives and collaborate with cross functional teams to address them.  

Resource and Financial Tracking and Management: 

  • Monitor resource utilization and allocation across projects.  

  • Ensure efficient utilization of resources and propose adjustments when necessary.  

  • Track project financials, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control across the portfolio.  

  • Provide accurate and timely financial reports to stakeholders.  

Provide Executive Updates:  

  • Prepare and deliver regular executive-level reports on the progress, status, and performance of projects within the portfolio.  

  • Present key findings, insights, and recommendations to senior management and stakeholders.  

  • Collaborating with project managers and team leads to gather relevant information for executive updates.  

  • Ensure that executive updates are comprehensive, accurate, and aligned with the organization's strategic objectives.  

Process Improvement and Optimization:  

  • Continuously evaluate and improve portfolio management processes and methodologies.  

  • Identify opportunities to enhance portfolio data collection, analysis, and reporting capabilities.  

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement tools and systems that streamline Portfolio data management and reporting processes.  

  • Stay up to date with industry best practices and emerging trends in portfolio management and data analysis. 

Minimum Requirements 

  • Typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience.

Critical Skills  

  • 8+ years of experience in leading technology strategy, portfolio management or related roles with significant exposure to healthcare or life sciences. 

  • PMP or PgMP (Project/Program Management) required

  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to access investment value, cost and ROI.  Experience developing department budget for the portfolio. 

  • Exceptional communication and executive presentation skills; able to influence without authority 

  • Strong understanding of healthcare regulatory environment (HIPAA, HITRUST, CMS, FDA) and digital health trends 

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across clinical, business and IT domains. 

  • Experience with portfolio management tools (e.g., Planview, Jira, ServiceNow). 

  • Adept at balance strategic vision and tactical execution. 

Additional Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency in using project management tools and software.  

  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies and best practices.  

  • Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and quality.  

  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.  

  • Knowledge of the healthcare industry or experience in IT project management within a healthcare organization is preferred.  

  • Knowledge of financial and investment concepts is preferred. 

Education

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in information technology, Business, Healthcare Administration or related fields; Master degree preferred OR equivalent experience.

  • PMP or PgMP (Project/Program Management) required

  • Travel – 25%

The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Our Base Pay Range for this position

$113,500 - $189,100
