Major Duties:

  • Following specific information, locates and makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning,replacing, packing, and sealing defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as dirty traps,sections of broken tile or pipe, and leaky drains using existing routes, openings, hangers, and levels. Checks operation and performs preventive inspections to small parts and sections of existing systems such as waterheaters, disposal units, and faucets. Uses and maintains tools such as tapes, rules, hacksaws, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, packing andcaulking irons, and pipe wrenches. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains safe andclean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.

Qualifications: In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4200 Plumbing and Pipefitting Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a PLUMBING WORKER without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of standard plumbing equipment assembly, installation, and repair, to include flow and drainage. 2. Knowledge of technical practices in order to carry out assignments, remove, clean, repair, reinstall, hook up, and replace various parts, fixtures, and joints. 3. Knowledge of safety regulations, procedures, and practices. 4. Skill in using and maintaining tools and equipment such as tapes, rules, hacksaws, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, packing and caulking irons, and pipe wrenches to remove, repair, install, and replace parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems without more than normal supervision. 5. Skill in reading and using sketches and work orders. 6. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and work with simple fractions. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The plumbing worker makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the parts of systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The plumbing worker frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment thatweigh up to 40 pounds unassisted and over 40 pounds with assistance. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The plumbing worker is sometimes required tomake repairs and installations outside in bad weather. Occasionally makes repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes arepresent. Occasional exposure to the possibility of broken bones. Frequent exposure to the possibility of scrapes, burns, andinfections. May be required to wear safety equipment, such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hard hats, and other personalprotective equipment. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
