Job Summary: The Secretary of the Senate's Senate Library is seeking a Picture Framer/Bookbinder. Major Duties:
Qualifications: PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in an office environment with exposure to everyday risks and discomforts, and requires the use of normal safety precautions. Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, and carrying items up to 25 to 50 pounds, as well as regular use of typical office equipment, software programs, and methods of communication such as a computer, email, telephone, and photocopier. Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required for performance of duties. Work also requires physical presence in the office, except as otherwise required by the Office of the Secretary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Work requires a high school diploma and two years of experience in matting and picture framing assembly skills; and basic knowledge of bookbinding, calligraphy, and embossing. Successful completion of a bookbinding apprenticeship or completion of a rare book and conservation training program preferred, and the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Skill in the operation and basic maintenance of equipment and the use of tools for calligraphy, embossing, glass cutting, matting, and framing. Knowledge of Library Binding Institute standards. Basic knowledge of the Senate as an institution preferred, with a desire and willingness to learn more about the legislative process, as well as the history and operation of the Senate. Ability to perform mathematical calculations when measuring and cutting materials. Ability to use creativity and originality when interpreting customer requirements and making suggestions or recommendations to customers. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team setting both within the department and outside organizational lines. Ability to plan, set, and manage project work requirements; evaluate work product; multitask; and meet deadlines. Ability to apply standard policies and practices to evaluate issues and resolve problems. Ability to provide prompt and courteous customer service and resolve customer concerns. Ability to learn accepted bookbinding, repair, book conservation, and preservation techniques. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Work requires successful demonstration of skills in matting and framing, calligraphy, and embossing. Ability to successfully complete Office-led training on paper and book repair techniques, as needed.
