Job Description
Interventional Cardiology Core Privileges includes the ability to perform history and physical examinations, admit, evaluate, treat, and provide consultation to patients of all ages with acute and chronic coronary artery disease, acute coronary syndromes, and valvular heart disease.
Qualifications
M.D. or D.O. degree.
Experience can be demonstrated in one of the following ways:
An applicant who has just completed a fellowship shall provide his/her fellowship log with a minimum of 250 therapeutic interventional cardiac procedures documented and a letter of reference must come from the fellowship director.
OR
An applicant who is not applying directly out of a fellowship shall provide a quality profile from hospital(s) where he/she currently has privileges showing his/her clinical activity for the past 24 months, including numbers of procedures performed morbidity, mortality, infection rates, and other complications. For Interventional catheterization skills, applicants should provide
documentation of 250 interventional procedures as the primary operator within the past 24 months and a letter of reference regarding competency from the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the institution where the applicant most recently practiced.
OR
If a quality profile is not available from the hospital(s) where the applicant currently has privileges, documentation of the applicant’s hospital-based clinical activity for the past 24 months is required. For Interventional catheterization skills, applicants should provide documentation of 250 interventional procedures as the primary operator within the past 24 months and a letter of reference regarding competency from the director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the institution where the applicant most recently practiced.
Oversight: The first 10 Cardiac Catheterization procedures at Sanford Medical Center will be performed under the supervision of the Medical Director of the Cath Lab or Physician Designee.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR INITIAL APPOINTMENT:
Physicians trained in Cardiology fellowship programs may have variable levels of expertise in a variety of different areas, depending on the focus of their particular training experience. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has defined the education, training, and experience necessary for many of these areas. The ACC 2008 Recommendations for Training in Adult
Cardiovascular Medicine Core Cardiology Training (COCATS3) (Revision of the 2002 COCATS Training Statement) published January 22, 2008 are available at www.acc.org and was used as the foundation for the privileges in Interventional. Additional information was obtained from the ACGME Program Requirements for Fellowship Education available at www.acgme.org and the
Clinical Privilege White paper on Interventional Cardiology. Additional resources were used for procedures that cross specialty lines.

Successful completion of a hospital affiliated Internal Medicine residency program of at least 3 years’ duration, and completion of a fellowship in Cardiology of at least 3 years’ duration and have successfully completed an additional 12 months of fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology. The ACGME, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada must accredit all programs. The Credentials Committee; Physician Executive or Medical Affairs Committee; and the Board of Directors or the Board of Governors may consider training at residency/fellowship programs accredited by organizations other than the above.
Certification by the appropriate specialty /subspecialty board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as applicable. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency training within the last five years shall be eligible, however must achieve board certification within five years from the date of completion of their residency training unless the appropriate governing Board waives such requirement. (Refer to each entities policy for grandfather exceptions)
Level 1(Cardiology) – Providers who will practice noninvasive cardiology and whose invasive activities will be confined to critical care unit procedures. Basic training required of all trainees to be competent consultant cardiologists.
Level 2 (Invasive Cardiology) – Providers who will practice diagnostic but not interventional cardiac catheterization. Additional training in one or more specialized areas that enables the cardiologist to perform or interpret (or both) specific procedures at
an intermediate skill level or engage in rendering cardiovascular care in specialized areas.
Level 3 (Interventional Cardiology) – Providers who will practice diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization. Advanced training in a specialized area that enables a cardiologist to perform, interpret, and train others to perform and interpret
specific procedures at a high skill level.
Additional Requirements: All providers requesting Laser Privileges must meet with the Laser Safety Officer prior to scheduling their first case to review safety & personnel precautions, scheduling criteria and laser equipment at the Sanford Facility.
Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.
