Overview of Position:

The Pharmacy Courier is responsible to provide timely medication movement from the central pharmacy to patient nurse servers, ensuring availability of patient medication and compliance with HFAP standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1.    Locates appropriate patient rooms and provides deliveries to nurse servers in accordance with nursing service level agreements.
2.    Requires unlocking of servers to insert medications for current patients, and ensures server is locked when completed.
3.    Remove medication from nurse servers for discharged patients.
4.    Removal of discontinued medications from designated “discontinued medication” area in the nurse server.
5.    Ensure that transferred patients’ medications are received by the new unit.
6.    Maintain positive rapport with medical, paramedical, and nursing staff in order to quickly resolve conflict to assure the highest quality of care and moral/ethical obligations.
7.    Interacts positively with other team members by constructively expressing opinions and actively participating in decision making teams.
8.    Thorough understanding of the drug distribution system in order to trouble-shoot and solve problems associated with the system.
9.    During down time, Pharmacy Couriers may be assigned to assist in other areas of the Support Service Team (after proper training) including Environmental Services, Food and Dietary, Transport equipment runs as well as possible patient discharges.
10.    Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
1.    High school graduate or equivalent.
2.    Sound interpersonal, decision-making, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
3.    Good listening, verbal and written communication skills.
4.    Ability to work under pressure in a complex and changing work environment.
5.    Ability to provide outstanding customer service and maintains high degree of confidentiality.

3.    Promotes Patient and Employee Safety

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Employee has requirements to travel to other floors and to deliver medications.  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1.    Must be able to walk for most of the shift, and pushing a cart throughout the hospital.
2.    Individual may need to use a personal computer and lock/unlock medication drawers, which requires the ability to apply finger dexterity.
3.    Bends and reaches to remove/place pharmaceuticals into/out of carts and servers.
4.    Regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds.
5.    Vision abilities required include up-close vision. Peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
6.    May be required to periodically rotate shifts and regular days off.  All system employees must be willing to work all shifts, extra hours, holidays and emergency shifts as required.
