Marathon Petroleum Company’s Illinois Refining Division in Robinson, IL is seeking a Personal Safety Professional. The Personal Safety Professional will report to the Personal Safety Manager and will be responsible for leading and/or assisting with development and implementation of safety programs and processes. This includes organizing or participating within standard development teams, developing training for new programs, facilitating implementation of new standards, and verifying effective implementation in the field.
Relocation is approved for this position.
Provides technical support of routine operations, project work, major maintenance or construction support, and emergency response to ensure worker safety throughout the planning and execution phases of work.
Supports development, maintenance, and execution of safety programs for implementation in the field to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and conformance to MPC corporate standards.
Conducts auditing on safety programs to verify compliance and conformance with regulatory and MPC standards. This includes analyzing safety performance data to identify and report trends, along with proposing recommendations to address areas of concern.
Leads and supports investigations for near-misses, incidents, and injuries to identify root causes and recommendations to prevent future incidents. Tracks recommendations to implementation to ensure completion.
Develops and presents training material related to a variety of safety topics in collaboration with Operations and Learning Development departments.
Provides subject matter expertise for assigned programs, which may include providing input as a competent person for fall protection and excavation safety, support during Life Critical work and input on other regulatory programs.
Develops safety related communications for inclusion into shift starter meetings, safety meetings, notices, and bulletins.
Administers health and safety management system for assigned assets to ensure sustained regulatory compliance.
Maintains current information regarding local, State, and Federal safety regulations. Provides consultation and support regarding occupational safety, including corporate ES&S policies and standards, and industry practices. Provides internal stakeholders with assessments of regulatory issues, including analysis of pending regulations.
Participates in workplace assessments. Compiles, analyzes and interprets information derived from workplace assessments, such as permit to work / job safety analysis audits, field safety audits, and safety observations. Advises on safe design aspects of equipment during project design. Supports and facilitates employee engagement in safety through channels like Safety Committees.
Prepares and submits timely and substantively complete regulatory reports, documentation and similar documents. Maintains current, accurate and complete records.
Reviews engineering designs and cost estimates for health, environmental and safety equipment or systems; determines engineering specifications and recommends equipment, as required.
Oversee all safety, health and security elements of the facility and its employees, including construction project work, exercising discretion when dealing with confidential and privileged information.
High school diploma or GED required with six (6) years of relevant experience, or Bachelor’s degree with four (4) years of relevant experience.
Working knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements.
Ability to identify issues and work as an independent problem solver.
Capable of managing conflict in the work environment.
Ability to focus on developing business acumen and technical knowledge.
Ability to manage complex projects with limited support.
Ability to identify risk and implement mitigations based on knowledge of the business.
Valid driver’s license required.
Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Previous experience supporting safety within petrochemical, industrial or manufacturing environment.
Experience maintaining collaborative relationships with multiple contractor partners in an industrial setting, coordinating safety expectations across multiple sites/assets.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, OneNote) is preferred.
Strong coordination skills, demonstrated through successful interdisciplinary project management (crafts, operations, environmental, inspection, engineering).
Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with both frontline workers and leadership.
Experience and/or comfort with presenting training material in both hands on and classroom settings.
Self-motivated, good time management, and mechanically inclined.
Possess a willingness to travel, make timely decisions, and be capable of expanding beyond the stated responsibilities.
Be able to think strategically and work towards continual improvement of internal processes.
