POSITION SUMMARY:

The assistant is a professional that ensures a positive overall impression of the railcars as well as providing the necessary service of ensuring clean rooms for guests.  The impression created by the rail car team assistant (s) is crucial to the reputation and success of Charter’s private railcars. Therefore, it is essential that assistant(s) are highly thorough and professional in completing their duties.  These duties include serving meals, bartending, assisting guests, cleaning, and helping with other operational needs as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three years working as a wait staff server or related role in a fine dining establishment.
  • Ability to travel away from home for 2 to 3 weeks at a time, as needed for seasonal railcar trips.
  • Ability to work irregular hours as required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a customer service focus and professional approach regarding serving and assisting guests.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and efficiency.
  • Works well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to assist with all tasks as assigned, including cleaning the interior and exterior of the railcars, organizing, and assisting with other railcar operation’s needs.
  • Safety focused and willingness to become first aid/CPR certified.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to grasp, write, push, pull, stand for long periods, walk, bend, stretch, perform repetitive motions, and may on occasion be required to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Must have some knowledge of the use of chemicals for cleaning purposes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diverse experience in the restaurant or related service industry – food service, banquets, special events.
  • Prior bartending experience and the ability to purchase/serve alcohol.
  • Knowledge of serving various sized groups and multi-course meals.
  • Mechanical aptitude and previous experience working in a mechanical capacity (mechanical based repairs, skilled trades, etc.).

Leadership, Team Building, Communication, and Performance Management

  • Handles negative situations and conflicts in a constructive manner and utilizes communication skills within the rail cars.
  • Initiates communication with supervisor or manager when tasks, instructions etc. are not clear.

Departmental Duties and Administration

  • Knows how to use and operate cleaning equipment.
  • Follows operational and shift change procedures and tasks which include but not limited to, cleaning and organizing bedroom, bathrooms, and shower, replenishing all amenities, etc.
  • Performs daily deep cleaning of guestrooms, restrooms, and laundry areas as assigned by Supervisor in accordance with the standards and procedures of the Rail cars.
  • Sets up and organizes all furniture, liquor, wine, ice, soda, coffee, and other amenities before and after events in bar lounge according to rail car standards.
  • Assists in organizing laundry (linen) as required.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the bar lounge and storage areas.
  • Checks for items that are not operable. Example. Light bulbs, fans, etc.
  • Physically checks and replenishes all amenities in bathrooms before, during and after events. 
  • Transports trash and waste to proper disposal area.
  • Collects all dishes, silverware, napkins, glassware when and where needed.
  • Also, to include but not limited to cleanliness of the exterior of the rail cars (weather permitting), Including, watering the rail cars, scrubbing the trucks, cleaning all windows, and washing the exterior of the rail cars.

Guest Arrivals and Departures

  • Greets guests, responds effectively to guest requests.
  • Prepares for guest and group arrivals and accommodates special requests whenever possible.
  • Is responsible for cleanliness of rooms upon arrival of guest and group check-in for established times.

Safety and Security

  • Adheres to safety and security guidelines, follows emergency and accident procedures, responds promptly and is familiar with the use of a fire extinguisher, AED (Defibrillator) and is CPR certified.
  • Manages and utilizes tools and cleaning equipment, cleaning chemicals in a safe manner. Reports broken or defaulted equipment to Supervisor/ Manager immediately.
  • Reports any observed or known safety hazards, conditions, or unsafe practices to supervisor on board.
  • Required to use walkie talkies when performing outside duties on railcars and to have in room at night for emergency communication.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR SUPERVISION:

  • None.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the Railcar Operations Manager.
  • Receives direction from Railcar Crew Chief and Railcar Chef.
  • Works together with other Assistants of the team.
