JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
We are searching for a self-motivated, detail-oriented Part-Time Grad to join our Polymer Composite Manufacturing Department (PCMD) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. PCMD develops, fabricates, and supports characterization of novel composite materials and polymers. This position will support our programs and customers by contributing to high-quality manufacturing, characterization, and documentation of results.
ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.
You will:
Conduct and support mechanical testing of composite materials
Maintain detailed test records
Regularly document progress and results clearly for internal discussion
Support fabrication of composite materials
Communicate and coordinate with your co-workers and supervisor on any technical challenges
Required skills/experience areas include:
Aptitude and willingness to safely operate servo-hydraulic test frames after receiving training
Familiarity with fiber-reinforced composite materials
Understanding of engineering mechanics (micro-mechanics, stress, strain, failure criteria, etc.)
Experience with technical and/or academic writing such as reports and conference or journal publications
Preferred skills/experience areas include:
Hands-on experience fabricating and testing composite materials
Familiarity with instrumentation/data acquisition methods (strain gages, extensometers, etc.)
Familiarity with ASTM and/or SACMA test standards for composites
Previous success working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented environment
Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required.
