Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
We’re seeking an Operational Asset Manager to provide strategic direction and hands-on leadership for our regional asset management teams. You’ll drive the development and delivery of Forward Works Programmes, optimise asset lifecycles, and ensure value for money—making a tangible difference to the safety, reliability, and future of transport in your region.
Key responsibilities:
Develop and implement 3-year and annual Forward Works Programmes
Lead and mentor asset engineering teams to build capability
Manage budgets, forecasting, and resource allocation for maximum value
Monitor and report on performance expectations and compliance
Direct renewal investigations and technical analysis for cost-effective solutions
Refine strategic asset programmes to secure funding and support long-term needs
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders for coordinated delivery
Review and endorse maintenance and renewal programmes
Provide expert advice on maintenance in design and capital project reviews
Contribute to business case development for future investment

You’re a proven leader with substantial experience in asset management and infrastructure. You thrive on complexity, enjoy building high-performing teams, and have a knack for strategic thinking and stakeholder engagement. Your analytical skills, technical expertise, and commitment to continuous improvement set you apart. In addition, you’ll bring:
Significant experience in asset management within transport or infrastructure
Demonstrated leadership in building and developing teams
Strong understanding of pavement and surfacing design and NZTA standards
Experience in strategic asset management planning and delivery
Knowledge of road asset deterioration, treatment options, and lifecycle analysis
Project and contract management expertise
Excellent analytical, communication, and relationship management skills
Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Asset Management, or related field
You will demonstrate knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an understanding of Te Ao Māori and promote tikanga and Te Reo Māori. You will also have knowledge of, or a willingness to gain an appreciation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it applies in the public service.

We are seeking to appoint at a salary between $160,000.00 and $200,000.00 of band commensurate to skills and experience.
