Job Summary: You will serve as a Non-Medical Clinical Counselor (SPIRIC) in the Family Readiness Department of NAVAL STATION ROTA.

Major Duties:

  • You will provide direct services in the form of non-medical clinical counseling, with an emphasis on supporting individuals affected by suicide-related behaviors (SRBs), as well as those experiencing grief and loss, including loss by suicide.
  • You will counsel individuals, couples, families, and groups on matters pertaining to family dynamics, couples’ communication, adjustment to commonly occurring personal and family issues/circumstances, and adjustment to military life.
  • You will receive and assess referrals made by military and civilian agencies for situational stressors, including deployment, grief, relocation, separation, relationship issues, parent/child issues, family hardships, and other challenges.
  • You will develop and execute short-term, solution-focused clinical counseling treatment plans for those individuals who request such services.
  • You will provide immediate and ongoing support to individuals, couples, families, and groups impacted by suicide-related events, and facilitate group and individual interventions to promote coping, resilience, and recovery.
  • You will develop safety plans tailored for individuals at risk of suicide or experience complex grief.
  • You will collaborate with military and civilian resources to ensure continuity of care and support.
  • You will comply with reporting protocols for high-risk cases.
  • You will identify crisis situations when conducting clinical assessments, and provide immediate crisis intervention, conduct risk assessments, and prepare and/or coordinate safety planning per best practices.
  • You will assist the Navy Clinical Supervisor with developing case management protocols, program delivery criteria and identifying gaps in existing services.
  • You will represent the Navy at community liaison meetings, collaborating on coordinating services for military members and their families, and engaging in community domestic violence prevention and awareness activities.
  • You will educate and consult with military and civilian agencies on scope of practice, how to engage services, available counseling services, clinical issues and treatment, and train on clinical areas of interest.

Qualifications: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Providing direct, short term, solution focused Non-Medical Clinical counseling services, with a primary focus on addressing issues related to Suicide Related Behaviors, grief, and loss AND Providing immediate and ongoing support to individuals, couples, families, and groups impacted by suicide-related events, facilitating group and individual interventions to promote coping, resilience, and recovery AND providing clinical services, such as: risk assessment, clinical assessment, diagnosis, and/or treatment plans to assist individuals using psychotherapeutic techniques, such as cognitive therapy, solution-focused brief therapy, family systems therapy, expressive therapies, etc. This position is a TIER TWO clinical care practitioner. Applicants must meet all of the following requirements as outlined in SECNAVINST 1754.8: 1. Possess at least a masters or doctoral degree in one of the following disciplines: a. Master's degree from a program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) or an equivalent degree, OR b. Master's degree from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) or an equivalent degree, OR c. Master's degree in Social Work from a graduate school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) or an equivalent degree, OR d. Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited university or professional school and a one-year APA accredited clinical internship 2. State or U.S. territory license or certification that provides legal authority to provide clinical services as an independent practitioner in the fields of Licensed Professional Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work, Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology. 3. When the state or U.S. territory licensing or certification requirements include a written examination, candidates for privileging, must have achieved a passing score on that examination. 4. Must have engaged in two years, full-time, post-masters supervised clinical experience.
