Position Summary
The Research Associate Professor will play a dual role as an independent investigator and strategic leader within the Institute for Neurosciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. This faculty member will establish and sustain a high-impact research program in a relevant neuroscience domain, producing rigorous, peer-reviewed scholarship and fostering collaborative, team-science initiatives across departments and cores. In parallel, the role will drive translational impact by developing venture capital and industry partnerships, leading scientific diligence, and convening investor–scientist forums to accelerate therapeutic innovation. The appointee will mentor early-career faculty and trainees, promote best practices in research integrity and data sharing, and contribute to the Institute’s educational mission through targeted teaching and community-building activities. As part of the Institute’s leadership team, the Research Associate Professor will help operationalize strategic priorities, coordinate cross-campus initiatives, design high-profile programs and events, and maintain an outward-facing narrative that elevates the Institute’s visibility and partnerships. This position is ideal for a scientist–leader who combines research excellence with a strong record of translational engagement and institutional service.
Primary Responsibilities
- Faculty Appointment: Research Associate Professor
- Develop and lead an independent research program in a relevant neuroscience domain.
- Design and execute experiments, analyze data with rigor and reproducibility, and maintain an active peer‑reviewed publication pipeline in field‑leading journals.
- Collaborate across MSOM departments/centers to leverage cores, biorepositories, and shared resources.
- Engage in proposal writing for external research support with institute support available for complex, multi‑site applications.
- Supervise trainees and staff, uphold lab safety/ethics, and present at national/international meetings.
- Contribute to team‑science consortia and data‑sharing initiatives aligned with Institute priorities
- Strategic & Industry Partnerships Development
- Develop and execute a partnership strategy with VC firms, corporate venture groups, accelerators, and strategic pharma/biotech to seed translational projects, create co‑funded research, and support venture formation/licensing pathways.
- Lead scientific diligence and opportunity landscaping with partners; coordinate with OTT/Tech Transfer and Legal on deal frameworks
- Convene targeted workshops/think‑tanks to align investors and Institute investigators on near‑term translational opportunities; track outcomes (term sheets, programs launched).
- Faculty Mentorship, Education & Community Building
- Mentor early‑career faculty and trainees on research strategy, translational readiness, and industry engagement; organize grant‑strategy seminars.
- Foster cross‑lab collaborations and team‑science proposals; promote best practices for robust, FAIR‑aligned data sharing where applicable.
- Light teaching/service consistent with a faculty appointment.
- Program & Institute Administration
- Serve on the Institute’s leadership team and help operationalize the Director’s strategy into clear roadmaps, milestones, and decision logs; align activities with MSOM/UHealth governance and accountability expectations for institute leaders.
- Orchestrate cross‑department initiatives with Neuroscience‑adjacent units to leverage cores, biorepositories, and shared infrastructure for Institute projects.
- Design and deliver high‑impact Institute programs—seminar series, visiting scholar/VC‑in‑residence days, translational symposia, and investor/science roundtables—to build the Institute’s external profile and catalyze collaborations.
- Partner with Department Chairs and Faculty Affairs on recruitment pipelines, onboarding plans, and mentorship pairings for Institute‑affiliated faculty and trainees.
- Socialize Institute‑level guidance on authorship norms, rigorous & reproducible research, data‑sharing/FAIR principles, and conflict‑of‑interest awareness—connecting faculty to the appropriate central offices for operational compliance.
- In partnership with MSOM Communications & Development, maintain an outward‑facing narrative highlighting Institute breakthroughs, partnerships, and translational milestones.
