Job Title: Network Design Intern

Rail Pass Type: Internship/Co-op (Full-time/Onsite)  

Departure and Arrival Date (Start -End): May 2026 – August 2026 (4months)

Work hours/week: 40 

Pay Details: $23-$30 CAD hourly

About This Opportunity 

The Network Design Intern will contribute to multiple project activities and support key initiatives, including script development, KPI updates, and the automation of specific tasks and processes. This role also provides an excellent opportunity to train and develop a candidate for potential future positions within the department.

Key Accountabilities   

  • Converts Customer (internal and/or external) requirements into conceptual designs and prepares associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations and technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features.

  • Similarly, creates new concepts or modifies existing concepts to fulfil customer requirements.

  • Creates and documents detailed network designs implementing the requirements.

  • Deploys the solutions in the lab and supporting testing activities.

  • Participates in technical reviews of component designs, installation designs, vendor selection and qualification, and other related areas.

  • Provides support for issues in the field.

  • Prepares and supports bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, trade-off of key features, estimation, etc.

  • Presents technical design and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise and non-ambiguous terms.

  • Interfaces and builds working relationships with Software, Hardware and testing groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issues.

  • Must be able to accurately reports work progress & estimates to complete the assigned work.

Key Requirements

  • Currently working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited university or college in Systems Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Completion of the second or third year of an undergraduate degree, or currently pursuing a master’s degree.

  • Knowledge of network principles and technologies:

  • Ethernet/IP-based networking (switching/routing protocols);

  • Redundancy and high-availability technologies;

  • Network/IT services;

  • MPLS and VPN technologies;

  • RF networking (802.11, LTE);

  • Knowledge/Experience in Programming/Scripting (Python, C, C++, Java script, Pearl, Shell script)

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week for the full duration of the internship.

  • Onsite presence is required for the entire internship.

  • Must be able to work at both locations: 105 Moatfield Dr, North York, ON M3B 0A2 and 100 Consilium Place, Scarborough, ON M1H 3E3

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Co-op student available for a 4month term, with at least one additional quarter or semester of coursework remaining after the completion of the internship.

  • Previous co-op/internship experience is a plus.

  • Rail signalling, CBTC, and knowledge of specification-driven network (as it applies to computer systems with both hardware & software operation) are  assets
