A Natural Scientist Supervisor job is available with the City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department. The Parks & Recreation Department maintains nearly 300 parks and public spaces citywide as well as provides recreational activities and educational programming that makes Fort Worth a great place to live, work and play. The City also has one of the most respected municipal forestry programs in the state and is recognized as the oldest Tree City USA in Texas. These attributes combined with a system of neighborhood and community parks contribute to meeting the City’s diverse parks, recreation and open space needs.

The Natural Scientist Supervisor within the Forestry Section oversees four full-time employees, coordinates Forestry’s volunteer activities and reports directly to the City Forester. This position will require some work on Saturdays for volunteer coordination and may require on-call response during evenings and weekends for emergency activation. The job is based at the City’s tree farm in Southeast Fort Worth.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a natural or physical science, including biology, geology, botany, range management, environmental science, environmental education, forestry, natural interpretation, or a related field
  • Four (4) years of experience working in a natural science field developing education plans, providing group instruction and/or developing and implementing natural resource management plans
  • Two (2) years of experience directly related to the field of assignment
  • One (1) year of direct supervision over professional staff
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • ISA Arborist certification
  • Functional knowledge of GIS
  • One (1) year or more experience with tree cultivation in a commercial greenhouse or nursery setting
  • Advanced knowledge/experience/education in urban or municipal forestry/arboriculture, including risk assessment
  • Possession of a Texas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator license or ability to obtain within six months of employment
  • Valid Texas Class A or B commercial driver’s license

The Natural Scientist Supervisor job responsibilities include: 

  • Oversee day to day operations of the tree farm’s growing facilities, tree production, planting programs and conduct long-range planning and coordination of plant material
  • Provide educational and outreach activities for tree planting and volunteer functions both at the municipal tree farm and across the city
  • Knowledge of and adherence to safe work practices and ability to train for safety
  • Supervise staff; conduct performance evaluations; perform timekeeping/scheduling functions; provide training opportunities and develop expertise of crew members; scheduled preventative maintenance programs for equipment and facilities
  • Knowledge of local trees, growing conditions, soil characteristics, propagation methods and greenhouse operations
  • Compose and track major initiatives, goals and metrics. Prepare professional reports on a routine and/or ad hoc basis
  • Effectively plan, coordinate and supervise Forestry’s Community Tree Planting Program and serve in an outreach role
  • Coordinate operational activities with other departments, outside agencies and organizations including the planning for special events
  • Assist in preparation of program budget; monitor and approve expenditures; ensure purchasing protocols are followed; and plan for capital expenditures
  • Respond to and resolve public inquiries and complaints
  • Proficiency and skills in the use of the Microsoft Office suite
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and intense noises.

Medium work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly having to move objects.
