The Opportunity

As National Portfolio Manager – Packages, you will drive the strategic oversight and work closely with the business on execution of the Business Package and Farm product portfolios. You will ensure underwriting decisions contribute to profitable and sustainable outcomes across these product lines. This role leads a team of Portfolio Specialists, develops and implements portfolio strategy, provides technical input to enhance underwriting capability and fosters cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing.

 

About the Role

  • Portfolio Strategy: Set and communicate the vision and strategy for Business Package and Farm portfolios, including underwriting appetite and accumulation management.

  • Planning and Monitoring: Lead budgeting, business planning, and reinsurance strategy and placement to support portfolio objectives.

  • Portfolio and Product Monitoring & Analysis: Monitor and assess performance at both product and portfolio levels, evaluating underwriting outcomes, customer value, fairness, and conduct.

  • Market Mapping & Insights: Gather and analyse customer, claims, regulatory, competitor, and performance trends to inform and validate strategic direction, drive profitable growth across market cycles, and identify new opportunities.

  • Book Price Management: Set book price and market price guardrails in line with underwriting appetite and portfolio strategy.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain robust relationships with external partners, brokers, and intermediaries. Identify and pursue new growth opportunities for Business Package and Farm products.

  • Underwriting Excellence: Collaborate with underwriting, pricing, and actuarial teams to efficiently assess and underwrite insurance risks within Business Package and Farm portfolios, ensuring alignment with risk appetite, authority limits, and underwriting guidelines.

  • Resource Management: Manage budgeted resources to support business objectives and ensure fiscal responsibility across portfolio initiatives.

  • Team Leadership: Lead and develop the Portfolio Specialists team by evaluating performance, addressing training needs, and promoting capability development and knowledge sharing.

  • Compliance & Governance: Conduct underwriting and portfolio management activities in compliance with all legal, regulatory, and risk frameworks, including support for audits, breach assessments, and complaints resolution.

About You

  • Direct experience in underwriting and portfolio management within general insurance, with exposure to Business Package and Farm products or significant experience in commercial business insurance.

  • Advanced knowledge of portfolio management, technical product knowledge and underwriting principles.

  • Proven ability to build relationships, communicate, negotiate, and influence at a senior level within the insurance industry.

  • Strong analytical, planning, and budgeting skills, with demonstrated financial aptitude including insurance pricing principles.

  • Experience in leading portfolios, pricing reviews, and strategic planning, with exposure to stakeholder engagement across underwriting, distribution, pricing, claims, risk, and compliance.
