Job Summary: The primary purpose of this position is to operate one or more types of gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles typically having a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 and up to 32,000 pounds on public roads (or equivalent) in a full range of traffic conditions and at highway speeds to transport cargo. Also operates fork lifts to facilitate cargo loading/unloading.

Major Duties:

  • -Drives one or more types of heavy trucks, such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, andtractor trailers, which are typically equipped with air brakes -Operates one or more electric, LPG, or diesel powered fork lift trucks to facilitate loading andunloading duties -Performs operator maintenance, such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning andwashing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation -Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations andmaintains a safe and clean work environment

Qualifications: QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5700 Transportation/Mobile Equipment Operation Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a WG-5703 MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR (FORK LIFT OPERATOR) more than normal without supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of operating one or more gasoline, diesel, or electric powered wheeled vehicles with a GVW of more than 26,000 and up to 32,000 pounds such as platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, and tractor trailers. 2. Knowledge of cargo handling and hauling and techniques for safeguarding and protecting cargo. 3. Knowledge of traffic and safety regulations, practices, and procedures pertaining to motor vehicle and fork lift operation. 4. Knowledge of operating one or more electric, LPG, or diesel powered fork lifts. 5. Ability to judge road/traffic conditions and read maps to determine the shortest and safest route; and meet pickup and delivery deadlines and schedules. 6. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. related to motor vehicle, fork lift, and power take-off unit operation and preventive maintenance. Physical Effort Physical effort is moderate to heavy. Work requires reaching, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Associated duties require stooping, bending, and climbing. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 40 pounds and heavier objects with assistance. Working Conditions Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads (or equivalent), and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. They drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
