Purpose

To partner with the business and Finance to support the execution of Diageo’s tax strategy, policies, and governance framework within the assigned scope. The role proactively engages with collaborators, applying a commercial mindset to support compliant decision-making, identify tax efficiency opportunities, and handle tax risks.

The role supports business strategy and operational activities by contributing to tax-related strategic decision-making and accomplishing the Global Tax strategy at market level, with primary responsibility handlingging tax compliance, reporting, and VAT recovery processes for Mexico Supply entities.

In addition, the role supports and drives the standardization, simplification, and automation of tax compliance and reporting processes to improve efficiency, strengthen controls, and enable the compliance team to manage increasing workload and regulatory complexity.

Job Dimensions

The role is responsible for the preparation, review, and timely submission of direct and indirect tax returns within scope, including related general ledger reconciliations and supporting documentation. This includes the review and coordination of transfer pricing adjustments and accountability for Group reporting requirements (P9/P12), Prior Year Adjustments (PYA), and cash tax reporting and forecasting.

The role ensures the accuracy and completeness of tax compliance and reporting deliverables, working closely with Finance, Supply, and Global Tax teams, and advancing risks and issues as appropriate. The position reports to the Senior Tax Compliance Manager LAC.

The primary geographical scope of the role is Mexico; however, the role may be required to support other regions or territories based on business needs. The markets within scope are strategically important to Diageo and chip in materially to Group financial and tax results, requiring a strong focus on execution, compliance, and effective risk management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle and supervise market tax risks, ensuring timely identification, assessment, and mitigation actions.

  • Provide tax advice and guidance to business and finance collaborators, enabling compliant decision-making aligned with tax policies, governance, and standards.

  • Complete tax compliance, accounting, and statutory reporting processes in line with global standard operating models and governance frameworks.

  • Lead tax compliance and reporting obligations for assigned markets, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and full regulatory compliance.

  • Drive standardization, simplification, and automation of tax processes, in collaboration with Tax Governance and Digital/Finance teams, with specific focus on Mexico Supply.

  • Support market-initiated projects and business initiatives, ensuring alignment with tax strategy and identification of tax efficiency opportunities.

  • Lead and participate in tax projects aimed at mitigating tax risks and delivering sustainable shareholder value.

  • Act as primary contact for tax audits, inspections, and enquiries, coordinating responses with internal collaborators and external advisors.

  • Support strategic tax decision-making and complete the tax strategy within defined scope.

  • Develop tax and accounting capabilities within the compliance and reporting team through coaching, training, and ongoing technical support.

VAT & Indirect Tax Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of VAT recovery strategies to improve cash recovery while ensuring compliance with local legislation and internal controls.

  • Be responsible for the review and analysis of VAT transactions to identify eligible VAT recovery opportunities and assess associated risks.

  • Ensure timely preparation and submission of accurate and complete VAT claims to tax authorities.

  • Supervise and handle VAT compliance risks, ensuring adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.

  • Drive continuous improvement of VAT processes, bringing to bear technology and data to improve efficiency, accuracy, and clarity.

  • Implement and optimize technology solutions to streamline VAT-related processes and reporting.

  • Lead, supervise, and develop a team of tax professionals involved in VAT compliance and recovery activities.

  • Provide technical guidance on complex VAT and indirect tax matters to the business and tax team.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of VAT and indirect tax legislation, assessing impacts and implementing required process or control changes.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, Supply, Operations, and other collaborators to ensure data quality and timely VAT reporting.

  • Manage communications with tax authorities and external advisors on VAT matters, resolving issues and enquiries effectively.

The qualifications and experience you will bring:

  • Accounting or tax qualification and confirmed experience on reporting or tax compliance

  • IFRS reporting (e.g. ACCA or dipIFR) and SAP experience is preferred

  • Discernment

  • Broad understanding of key international tax issues

  • At least 2 years experience in developing teams and junior teams

  • Experience in IS project management and in process standardization is preferred

  • Experience in handling others through changes.
