Course: Methods of Structured English Immersion for K-12 Education

In this course, teacher candidates examine the fundamentals of the legal, historical, and educational foundations of Structured English Immersion (SEI) and other instructional programs and approaches for teaching English learners. Theoretical principles of language acquisition and the role of culture in learning are examined. Methods of assessment are identified and analyzed. Teacher candidates identify strategies to promote English language development and improve student achievement as they plan, deliver, and evaluate standards-based instruction for English learners.

 What You Will Do:

  • Facilitate classroom lecture and discussions
  • Engage students in learning course objectives and topics
  • Assess student performance and mentor success in the classroom
  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

What You Will Bring:

  • Preferred: Doctorate in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages or Doctorate in Teaching English as a Second Language or Doctorate in Second Language Acquisition or Doctorate in Second Languages and Cultures or Doctorate in Multicultural Education or Doctorate in Bilingual Education or Doctorate in Applied Linguistics or Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Minimum: Masters in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages or Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language or Masters in Second Language Acquisition or Masters in Multicultural Education or Masters in Bilingual Education or Masters in Applied Linguistics or Masters in Curriculum and Instruction or related field AND
    • 2 areas of exceptional expertise.
    • All instructors must have a valid state teacher certification in ESL or bilingual education or a valid state teacher certification in elementary or secondary or early childhood or special education with an endorsement in ESL or bilingual education AND
      • three years of experience teaching English Learners.
