The Medical Technology Student is responsible for performing, under supervision, technical laboratory procedures on neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient specimens to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Procedures are performed in the assigned Laboratory section, such as Bacteriology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Diagnostic Immunology, Hematology or Toxicology. A Brief Overview
The Medical Technology Student is responsible for performing, under supervision, technical laboratory procedures on neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient specimens to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Procedures are performed in the assigned Laboratory section, such as Bacteriology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Diagnostic Immunology, Hematology or Toxicology. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Performs and reports results on technical laboratory procedures on neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, and animal customers under the supervision of a Medical Technologist.
  • Performs under supervision, preventative and routine maintenance, quality control tests as indicated by department policies.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency.

Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Required - Currently enrolled in a college program Medical Technology

Work Experience Requirements
  • Preferred - No prior work experience

Licenses and Certifications Requirements
  • Required - Laboratory Trainee work permit - Tennessee Department of Health - Medical Laboratory Board

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to understand and prepare moderately complex written materials, such as laboratory reports.
  • Normal eye-motor coordination, manual dexterity and visual perception.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with Associates and physicians.

Supervision Provided by this Position
  • There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.

Physical Demands
  • Invasive and non-invasive patient contact periodically throughout shift.
  • Possible exposure to body fluids as well as hazardous and poisonous materials.
  • Periodic exposure to high levels of noise throughout shift.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate both orally and written to other individuals.
  • Normal vision.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. periodically throughout shift.
  • Ability to reach, bend and twist periodically throughout shift.
  • Must have good balance and coordination.
  • Must have good use of hands for gripping or squeezing as well as repetitive hand and wrist motion.
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination.
