Job Summary: The Medical Supply Technician (MST) Trainer, Sterile Processing Service (SPS) for Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) serves under the Associate Director for Patient Care Services. The incumbent is a subject matter expert in a wide variety of duties, including the various cleaning, decontamination and sterilization processes associated with Reusable Medical Devices (RMD), which includes medical and surgical instruments for reprocessing.

Major Duties:

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Major duties include but are not limited to: Develops formal and informal written plans for the SPS training program, in compliance with accreditation organizations and VHA-specific requirements as well as medical center policies and procedures for SPS and related staff. Facilitates training of SPS staff through educational programs and job specific instruction. Improves SPS processes by facilitating the application of new technology of RMD by training all new and existing staff. Develops, monitors and revises staff training, to identify areas of strength and need. Develops an education plan (literature review, continuing education, in-services, certification and/or formal education) to maintain and improve knowledge in specialized areas of reprocessing RMD. Participates in tracking, trending, and analyzing education data. Identifies opportunities for improvement, makes recommendations, and/or prepares reports based on findings. Provides education and training regarding SPS processes, including decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution support of critical and semi-critical RMD for the Medical Center. Provides hands-on training for SPS staff following departmental SOPs and policies. Will be responsible for filling out the competency paperwork for staff utilizing two validation codes, level of competence, initials, and whether staff meet expectations. Assembles new employee orientation binders and competency binders, perform new employee initial SPS orientation prior to releasing new employee to a preceptor. Monitors all new employee training, and monitors progress of new employee weekly. Will ensure competencies are completed. Performs and coordinates in-service training each week, create a fiscal year training schedule annually, work closely with the SPS RN Educators to ensure competency spreadsheet is maintained and provide training to end users when applicable on new instrumentation or products used by SPS. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English. Experience and/or Education: Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing), GS-07 (Trainer): Experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6). Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to: Receiving contaminated critical and semi-critical RME in the decontamination area; disassembling the RME and determining the correct cleaning method, such as but not limited to ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers, cart washers and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions; inspecting, assembling and determining the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as but not limited to steam, Sterrad, Steris, ETO, and high level disinfecting scope reprocessors; performing and documenting daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment. AND Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Knowledge of SPS and Infection Prevention regulations. Knowledge of procedures and/or operations in training developed for, and operations of SPS functions for both new and existing staff. Ability to manage integrated training programs as it relates to sterile processing procedures. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel or other software programs in order to complete reports and develop skills. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and management officials in regards to sterile processing procedures.
