Major Duties:

  • The Surgical Technician located in the Health Services Department at the Federal Correctional Complex, Butner, North Carolina. Acts as a member of the patient care team during surgical intervention. Set up the OR suite with the circulating nurse, providing aseptic technique guarding against pathogenic microorganisms from the operating room sterile field and surgical wound. Works with the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, and Anesthetist and Registered Nurses as a member of the patient care team during surgical intervention. Maintains a bacteria free, safe physical environment for patients and fellow workers in accordance with established hospital infection control standards. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications: To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Basic Requirements: Specialized Experience: For positions at GS-4 and above: Experience in operating, supervising the operation of, or instructing in the operation of equipment related to the particular specialization for which application is made. Experience gained in the operation of equipment in a specialization directly related to the specialization may be credited through the GS-5 level. Experience gained in the operation of equipment for animal diagnosis or treatment may be credited as specialized experience for that particular specialization through the GS-5 level. OR Education: One year of graduate education or 27 quarter hours of graduate education in the related field of the position. NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Experience Some examples of the qualifying experience are: Exposure as both first and second scrub with experience suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples and cutting sutures. Experience preparing, organizing and maintaining highly complex sterile surgical setups such as microscopes, air powered, fiber optic, and laparoscopic equipment. Experience in appropriate surgical patient draping, efficient surgical suite turnover, restocking of necessary supplies, and anticipating the operative needs of the surgeon and team in regard to delivery of patient comfort and care. Experience in a broad range of instrumentation, the sterilization techniques necessary to meet surgical standards, and inspecting the integrity of instrumentation with circulating nurse prior to/after use. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience.
