The Senior Mechanical Technician role performs required scheduled and unscheduled mechanical maintenance on pumps, valves, engines, tank mixers, etc., and performs pump to motor alignments. They maintain maintenance records and evaluates wear and repair needs and trends of pipeline equipment, and maintain the assigned tools required to perform their job duties.
This is a field-based role with frequent work in open environments with extremes of heat and cold, often in proximity to high voltage and/or chemicals, which requires safety accommodations such as protective clothing and equipment. This role is subject to callouts for work associated with Plains field operations and/or emergency response.
Job Responsibilities:
Performance of all Junior and Intermediate Mechanical Technician responsibilities without supervision.
Works independently to supervise contractors and manage projects from start to completion.
Demonstrates ability to make independent decisions and reports work progress routinely.
Participates in non-regular maintenance work.
Responsible for ensuring that safety, regulatory, and operation integrity policies are followed.
Responsible for responding to all applicable breakdown and emergency equipment failures.
Responsible for assisting in the Preventive Maintenance (PM) program; preventative, predictive and corrective, organizing, modifying, recording, and updating PMs as assigned.
Conducts and oversees the maintenance of equipment, such as ensuring alignment of engines / motors to a driven asset; the commissioning of new equipment; the interpretation of vibration data; performing root cause failure analysis to improve reliability; and the removal and replacement of assets as needed.
Confirms operation of control devices and vibration equipment for centrifugal and positive displacement pumps and other rotating equipment and resolves abnormal conditions (e.g., high vibration, seal leaks) using vendor manual recommendations.
Plans and conducts complex repairs to equipment such as pumps, seals and bearings, pump alignment, MOV repair etc.
Rebuilds positive displacement / centrifugal pumps, tank mixers, valves etc.
Directs and assists with pipeline drain downs and refills.
Participates in construction projects and planning, turnaround planning, installing, and commissioning, and other special assignments or projects within terminals and pipelines.
Ensure equipment is maintained in accordance with the maintenance control system.
Ensures operating equipment inspections are performed and records are maintained within company CMMS (Maximo).
Maintains accurate documentation applicable to all aspects of the job function; ensures accurate and timely record management including maintaining compliance and regulatory records, completing work authorization permits, and executing MOC's.
Accountable to inform senior personnel of hazard identification and near misses.
Demonstrates safe work practices following Plains’ safety policies and procedures.
Assists with any other pipeline related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must be a ticketed Journey Person.
5 – 10 years of prior gas plant, refinery, pipeline, or oilfield experience.
Minimum two (2) years of work experience at the Intermediate Mechanical Technician level.
Ability to speak, read, and write English and the ability to perform basic math.
Ability to read and interpret facility drawings, technical schematics, and operational and service manuals.
Ability to work in a team-based work environment, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to troubleshoot and make mechanical repairs to company equipment.
Proficient in electrical and mechanical system related to industrial process equipment.
Must have good computer skills, experience using Microsoft Office suite with strong emphasis on Excel and/or other spreadsheet applications and be able to effectively use the company CMMS (Maximo).
Must be familiar with federal, provincial, and industry regulations as well as Plains operating procedures.
Must be O.Q. qualified to perform all Level I tasks.
Must have an outstanding safety record.
Ability to successfully complete company Haz-Mat training, required DOT operator qualifications to perform pipeline mechanical operations, and mandatory safety training.
Ability to work in moderate to heavy physically demanding working conditions, including working outdoors in an open environment with extremes of heat and cold.
