Job Description:

Designs mechanical structures, products, components, or assemblies using engineering and architectural principles.   This level of role is considered to have working knowledge of the  subject matter.

The Mechanical Designer performs a variety of design, application, and checking duties using engineering and functional specifications. This role works closely with Mechanical Engineers to design new equipment or modify and adapt existing units to meet specific customer requirements or support product modernization initiatives.

Essential Functions

  • Visualize, develop, and define the design of new machines, machine sections, systems, and units, including related modifications to structures and components.
  • Prepare moderately complex layouts using CAD tools; evaluate designs to ensure proper fit, function, manufacturability, cost effectiveness, and operational performance.
  • Collaborate with engineering personnel to ensure appropriate engineering calculations are completed for materials, stresses, tolerances, clearances, and other design factors, utilizing advanced mathematics and modern CAD technologies.
  • Create and maintain bills of material (BOMs), detailed and assembly drawings, pneumatic schematics, and related documentation using CAD tools.
  • Analyze and review moderately complex engineering change requests using established checklists and design documentation; ensure accurate execution while meeting project milestones.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of standard work procedures and design best practices as needed.
  • Support cross-functional departments by assisting with manufacturing or procurement challenges and maintaining supplier interfaces.
  • Participate in trial runs, build reviews, and design validation activities.
  • Travel to customer locations, as required, to provide technical support during installation and operation, and to identify opportunities for manufacturing or operational improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications & Competencies

  • Ability to competently perform all Level I Mechanical Designer duties.
  • Solid working knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles used in the production of precise technical drawings, blueprints, models, and layouts.
  • Practical knowledge of engineering science and technology as applied to mechanical systems, machinery, and tooling.
  • Understanding of machine shop practices and mechanical assembly methods.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of industry standards and applications relevant to the role.
  • Proficiency in applied mathematics, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics.
  • Strong analytical, logical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • 2D CAD and SolidWorks Required.
  • Ability to work effectively within a cross-functional team environment.
  • Ability to work in customer facilities and manage professional customer relationships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a highly team-oriented mindset.

Required Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or technical degree preferred.
  •  2+ years of experience in mechanical design or a related engineering support role.
