The Mechanical Development Engineer (MDE) - Mechanical Integration (MI) is responsible for the design, development and release of housing, castings, stampings, bearings, fasteners, seals, plugs, harness, cooling & lubrication systems. These components are engineered to function together within an assembly, ensuring that the product meets its overall performance requirements.

The MDE operates within the eDrive Engineering organization, partnering closely with CAD Designers and CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) Engineers. In this role, the MDE is responsible for executing work requests from Project Team members to ensure that defined program performance requirements and timing objectives are successfully met.

Additionally, the MDE is responsible for requesting design and analysis support from CAD and/or CAE team members, while coordinating simultaneously with Manufacturing, Purchasing, and suppliers to achieve successful component release.

The MDE works in close partnership with Manufacturing team, assembly disciplines, GSM (Global Supplier Management), SDE (Supplier Development Engineer), and suppliers to gather input and address technical issues. This cross functional collaboration supports both production launch and ongoing manufacturing activities, with a strong emphasis on achieving cost reductions and driving robust product improvements.

·       Issue CAE requests and provide technical direction for system and component analyses to support design validation and optimization.

·       Create and maintain component and sub-system Design Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs) and utilize them to define and manage Special Characteristics that ensure product reliability and compliance with program requirements.

·       Assess structural integrity under mechanical loads, vibration, and fatigue conditions.

·       Evaluate thermal management performance for cooling and lubrication systems, including heat dissipation and expansion.

·       Confirm sealing capability to prevent fluid leakage and contamination.

·       Ensure manufacturability by validating casting, stamping, and machining feasibility while minimizing cost and complexity.

·       Optimize weight and efficiency while maintaining robustness and performance targets.

·       Inspect for potential defects such as porosity, cracks, or misalignment during prototyping and production.

Validation & Testing

·       Create Advanced Design Verification Plan and Report (ADVP&R) to validate component performance, and issue laboratory work orders to direct technicians in conducting component testing.

·       Establish technical requirements for supplier selection and contribute to the decision-making process.

·       Conduct dimensional inspections to verify tolerance and ensure proper fit within assemblies.

·       Perform material testing (strength, hardness, corrosion resistance, thermal properties) to confirm suitability for application.

·       Coordinate structural analysis and durability testing to validate performance under mechanical loads, vibration, and fatigue conditions.

·       Carry out thermal performance evaluations to ensure effective cooling, lubrication, and heat dissipation.

·       Validate sealing effectiveness through leak tests and environmental exposure assessments.

·       Inspect prototypes for defects such as porosity, cracks, misalignment, or surface irregularities.

·       Analyse mechanical components for wear and durability to ensure compliance with performance and reliability requirements.

·       Support lab and vehicle-level testing for wear, leakage, torque, vibration, and thermal performance and verify assembly compatibility by testing integration with bearings, fasteners, harnesses, and other components.

·       Conduct reliability, endurance, and manufacturability reviews under simulated operating and environmental conditions to confirm casting, stamping, and machining feasibility, cost efficiency, and long-term durability.
