Salary Range: $65,000 - $85,000 (base salary + bonus)

Position Summary:

Heavy-duty equipment mechanics repair, troubleshoot, adjust, overhaul and maintain trucks and mobile equipment used in Highway Maintenance and Operations. This includes trucks of various sizes, winter salt spreaders including plows and hydraulic systems, tractors, truck mounted sweeper etc. They will be responsible for triage and scheduling of routine and non-routine maintenance of all 407 ETR maintenance equipment. Post season rehab and rebuild of salt spreaders and preparation of trucks.  This includes calibration checks of both 407 ETR and winter maintenance contractors, spreaders and plowing equipment.  There will also be opportunity to be involved and both summer and winter activity to maintain the highway.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Scheduling and documentation of maintenance and repairs of all 407ETR equipment, inhouse for minor work or outsource and oversee quality for more major repairs.

  • The calibration of both 407ETR plowing and spreading equipment, as well as quality checking  the winter contractor’s equipment as per MTO and contract specifications.

  • Maintain and make ready for winter operations of  407ETR’s winter material spreaders, including an inspection and rebuild following each winter season to have equipment ready for the next season

  • Responsible for inspecting winter maintenance equipment, licensing of vehicles as per HTA – safety inspections.

  • Perform general highway maintenance (i.e. sign repairs, bridge joint repairs, fence repairs, concrete and asphalt road surfaces, plowing gantry service areas in the winter, litter removal and other general winter maintenance)

  • Train staff on the use and safety of all types of highway operational equipment, including tool box talks on general equipment safety and proper use and documentation.

  • Operate and maintain various hand and power tools such as compressors, spray equipment, grass trimmers, cut-off saws, band saws, chain saws etc.

  • Operate tractor mowers, pick-up trucks, broom sweeper attachments, 5 ton flatbed truck

  • Perform traffic control duties regarding set-up and removal, lane closures for emergency incidents and routine maintenance activities

  • Installations, removal and placing traffic control equipment for both in house and contractor maintenance activities including routine work as well as emergencies.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Certification of Qualification in Automotive Service Technician (310S), Truck and Coach Technician (310T), Heavy-Duty Equipment Certificate, Propane Certificate, and Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) Card.

  • Completion of secondary education or equivalent

  • Three to five years’ licensed experience repairing and maintaining heavy equipment. Demonstrated experience in the maintenance and repair of onboard vehicle and equipment computerized systems, electrical systems, hydraulic and air systems

  •  Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

  • Thorough working knowledge and experience of vehicle and heavy equipment operation, preventative maintenance techniques and repair methods, diesel engines, required equipment safety inspections procedures, welding methods and machining, parts inventory control practices, and sound safety practices. Thorough working knowledge of vehicles and equipment and other fleet operation, maintenance management systems, preventative maintenance techniques and repair methods, emergency vehicle equipment safety inspection procedures, welding and body work techniques/methods and sound safety practices

  • Ability to use both Arc and MIG welders as well as oxy/actelyene cutting torches

  • General knowledge of highway operations and working experience with various types of vehicles and equipment used in road maintenance activities

  • Ability to multi-task, cope with interruptions and work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines, exercise discretion and good judgment particularly when handling highly confidential/sensitive information. Possess a high level of initiative and personal integrity

  • Service oriented to deal with customers in a professional manner

  • Must be able to lift maximum 80 lbs.
