Job Summary: This vacancy is for aWG-5334-10, Marine Machinery Mechanic (Crane Op) located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, BASE NEW ORLEANS in NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana.

Major Duties:

  • You will serve as a/an Marine Machinery Mechanic (Crane Op) and be responsible for removing machinery from boats, ships, or stations for repairs or modification. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Operating boom cranes of varying sizes (30-ton to 50-ton marine travel lift, 20-ton with 70-foot boom, 25 ton with 72- foot boom, 35-ton with 136- foot boom, 45-ton with 60-foot boom, etc.). Inspects equipment and reports defects. Transporting a variety of loads including buoys, small boats, wood and steel pilings, vessel masts, booms, crane sections, engines, and heavy equipment and machines. Lifts personnel in a man lift safety basket to perform Performing refueling and routine maintenance of equipment, including oil and filter changes, tire repairs, and chassis and wire rope lubrication. Starting equipment and checks all gauges and meters. Operating gasoline and diesel- powered forklifts with maximum lifting capacities to 25 tons and 18 feet. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, prepare sketches, reports, and diagrams, and follow manufacturer's operating and maintenance instructions.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: - Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. - Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN-OUT) - Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading) - Ability to Use and Maintain general mechanics tools and various tools, equipment, and measuring devices - Knowledge of Materials - Troubleshooting and repair of both shipboard and material handling engines and equipment.
