This role is part of the Intern Program and is designed to attract high-performing undergraduate students pursuing Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or related disciplines. The position offers project-based assignments that contribute to advancing Smith+Nephew’s business objectives while supporting the student’s professional development. The program provides meaningful, hands-on work experience, along with team-building activities and social events where available. Successful candidates will gain valuable exposure to the medical device industry, helping to shape their career interests and create potential future employment opportunities.

What will you be doing?

  • This role works closely with managers and cross-functional teams to deliver assigned projects and present project outcomes to senior leadership. The individual will support engineering and quality activities by conducting root cause investigations for product defects, collecting and trending data, performing device measurements, process mapping, and verification testing to help identify potential causes and improvement opportunities.

  • The role also involves supporting material disposition decisions by providing engineering input in collaboration with the Quality team, as well as assisting with engineering studies, material preparation, and equipment, jig, and fixture setup under supervision. In addition, the individual will participate in equipment installation, continuous improvement initiatives, process validation activities, and project implementation, while applying basic lean principles to help eliminate non-value-added activities in manufacturing processes.

What will you need to be successful?

  • This opportunity is open to undergraduate students currently matriculated at an accredited university, majoring in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline, with a strong academic record (3.0 CGPA preferred). The position is based in Batu Kawan, Penang, and prior internship, part-time, or apprenticeship experience is an added advantage.

  • Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in manufacturing engineering and process improvement, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. The ideal candidate will be a strong team player with good leadership potential, effective communication skills, and high learning agility, able to analyze data, solve technical problems, and present ideas clearly to senior leaders. The role also requires independence, adaptability, and strong time management and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, tight deadlines, and a dynamic work environment.
