Global Markets Corporate Banking (GMCB) is an integral part of BMO Capital Markets’ Global Markets group. It provides lending and trading expertise for a variety of sectors and establishes credit facilities to support global markets business.

Overview of Role:

This role requires an experienced senior corporate banking leader with a deep understanding of trading product structures. The portfolio responsibilities include both the Commodities and Diversified Products, with the latter encompassing single product relationships across an array of trading products. Expertise in the commodities sector, including carbon, as well as for bespoke trading products (unrelated to commodities) for diversified industry clients, is essential.  The role requires an individual that has an excellent ability to assess and understand unique client trading product needs, and who can deliver innovative solutions to both clients and internal partners. 

In this role, this individual will:

  • Be a member of the GMCB leadership team and a key contributor to the overall success of Global Markets.  
  • Coordinate and collaborate with line of business partners to drive business and execute on growth plans.  
  • Manage the execution of strategic initiatives to deliver on business and financial goals.
  • Exhibit a track record of building out new businesses and initiatives in various global jurisdictions.
  • Integrate new trading products into the Bank’s risk framework.
  • Serve as a team role model with a client-centered approach. 
  • Contribute insights and recommendations through analysis of data and information.
  • Demonstrate success by identifying risks, gaps and process improvements.
  • Monitor productivity against benchmarks and eliminate inefficiencies.
  • Deliver open communication both internally and with key business partners in other areas of the bank.
  • Lead, mentor and develop a cross-border team.
  • Liaise with Regulators, as applicable to the role.
  • Broader accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Product Knowledge (includes expert understanding of):

  • The precious and base metals industry including transactional structures, such as inventory financing (both allocated and unallocated), physical and financial trading, prepayments, leases, consignments, in a broad range of jurisdictions and industries.
  • The carbon market including project development, inventory financing (in both Voluntary and Compliance markets), and derivative trading with carbon credits. A good understanding of developing carbon markets in various jurisdictions is ideal. 
  • The oil and gas markets, clients, and security structures for trading agreements including both financial and physical trading and inventory financing.
  • In addition to commodity products, broad understanding of trading products for diversified clients.

People Management:

  • Ability to manage a diverse cross-border team, across a range of grade levels.
  • Lead a team capable of delivering the targeted business results.
  • Effectively influence and gain support of other areas of the bank required to deliver solutions to clients.
  • Attract, retain, and enable the career development of top talent.
  • Improve team performance, recognize and reward performance, coach and develop employees (including management of under-performance).

Strategic Focus:

  • Collaborate with sector coverage relationship partners to generate ideas, identify client solutions, pursue sector marketing efforts, cover clients, and deliver timely solutions.
  • Recommend business priorities, advise on resource requirements and develop roadmaps for strategic execution.
  • Develop and leverage relationships across lines of business, with executives and external clients to foster and support coordination.
  • Monitor client, client industry and regulatory agencies for potential changes which may affect overall portfolio and business needs.  
  • Acts as a trusted advisor to the Global Head of Global Markets Corporate Banking related to business decisions and implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Identify emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making.
  • Exhibit expert understanding of business/group challenges and capable of creating solutions to address.
  • Apply expertise and think creatively to address unique or ambiguous situations and to find solutions to multiple, interdependent, and complex problems.
  • Demonstrate strong ability to communicate abstract concepts in simple terms.

Risk Management:

  • Obtained high signing authority in prior roles and is comfortable operating as a senior specialist resource across the bank.
  • Has expert understanding of the complexity of transactions and related risks (credit, market, operational, legal/compliance, reputational, jurisdictional etc.); ensures that these risks are appropriately reviewed and assessed by the team.
  • Balances the bank's risk appetite with the client and business needs in making recommendations/ proposals and proactively takes accountability for risks assumed.
  • Ensures the bank’s applicable policies and guidelines are adhered to: Initiates amendments to current policies and guidelines to reflect the bank’s changing risk appetite and ensures that new policies and guidelines are established when necessary or appropriate.
  • Safeguards that systems, reporting and other controls are sufficiently robust such that applicable policies and guidelines are followed, and that risk is appropriately mitigated.
  • Attests that all risk management and compliance reports are current, accurate, and relevant.
  • Considers risk, internal controls and compliance as part of day-to-day accountabilities and adheres to policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 15 years of experience, with relevant expertise in corporate banking global markets sector
  • MBA or equivalent experience in financial services, with an emphasis on credit, risk management and sales
  • Credit qualification
  • Change management and leadership experience, with a strong understanding of the dynamics of a global business
  • Expert in business development with demonstrated excellence in cross-selling
  • Results-oriented, with a demonstrated ability to identify opportunities and issues, to handle multiple priorities while providing clarity and instilling confidence
  • Able to think conceptually and transform ideas into practical solutions for the client and the bank
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills
  • Adaptable, flexible, and disciplined
  • Expert level of relationship management, employee development and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent ability to advocate persuasively and negotiate with influence when conducting business with peers and clients

  • Expertise in financial computer applications and database management tools

Please note the base salary for this role is $225,000 CAD.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
