ROLE OVERVIEW:
In this position, you will lead the Technical Services New Work & Operational Performance functions to optimize resources and deliver new work and project targets in a safe, efficient, cost-effective and innovative manner. You will also support the expansion of Thiess Americas through best practice and cost-effective mine engineering solutions and continually pushing to improve operational performance through coaching and site support.
The Tech Services Manager will provide leadership, training, mentoring and coaching to technical and operational staff as a key member of the Americas leadership team. Develop and maintain relationships with key technical contacts across Thiess’ business, support and promote standardized systems and processes for technical services. You will also facilitate and coordinate technical support from Corporate as required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to analyze each mining operation as a system (regardless of complexity) and determine the critical value drivers and devise a strategy which maximizes return from both a Thiess and a Client (where possible) perspective. Ability to apply this analysis across the business concurrently
- Undertake regular visits to projects for project technical staff engagement and performance optimization coaching
Governance
- Ensure regional governance processes are aligned to TMS
- Manage data preparation for periodic reviews and reconciliations
- Act as a conduit between the Corporate Technical Services team and site project teams
Team Management
- Manage the activities of direct reports, including development plans
- Ensure teams are trained and developed, provide training and mentoring to staff across the regions
- Manage team performance
Project Management
- Manage the planning and allocation of resources to allocated tasks for current and new projects as agreed
- Ensure that all tasks undertaken by team are appropriately scoped, with deliverables and timelines agreed and met
- Provide accurate estimate of task duration and resources required
Planning
- Contribute to development of North America Regional Business and Site Project plans annually
Technology Awareness
- Keep abreast of advances and changes in the software tools and technology through corporate connections, industry contacts and networks
- Identify opportunities to streamline technical processes using technology as appropriate
Customer Service
- Ensure that all communications from the department to customers is prompt and courteous
- Provide a strong connection point between projects and the Corporate support functions
- Leverage off existing relationships to build a robust relationship network across the Thiess global business
Continual Improvement
- Ensure that identified processes improvements are documented and shared across the business
- Actively identify and coach opportunities for continuous improvement in processes and procedures
- Promote innovation and contribute to strategic business development
Health, Safety & Environment
- Demonstrates a high concern for the health and safety of self and others
- Act and lead personnel to a professional standard with respect to safety, health and environmental issues
- Ensure that all team members are aware of the Thiess Safety Policies and Procedures
- Ensure yourself and team members participate in job observations when on-site
- Maintain sufficient levels of health and fitness for international travel to Thiess operating areas (i.e. vaccinations, physical fitness, etc)
Information Communication Technology (ICT)
- Supervise all ICT functions within the region
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
Education: Degree-qualified in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. Mining, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering) or possessing equivalent industry experience
Experience
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in a broad range of Mine Engineering / and ideally Mine Site Technical and/or Operational Management roles
- Practical experience in risk management in Mine Design
- Previous experience working with cultures outside of home country
- Global best practice knowledge and experience
- Strategic and innovative approach to problem solving and ability to define critical value drivers (cost and revenue) in an operation
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
- In depth knowledge of mine planning, geology, GIS, Drill & Blast, mining principles and other related mining support services
- Highly effective customer-facing skills and proven ability to build and maintain relationships, both internally and externally
- Understanding the key value drivers for current and new mining operations
- Knowledge of current and emerging mining technologies and concepts
- Knowledge of design and scheduling best practice tools and methodologies
- Cost estimating and Contract Management
- Regular travel will be required, including to remote and developing locations Commitment to Thiess’ values of safety, discovery, accountability, respect, and empowerment
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License
- Authorization to work lawfully in the USA without sponsorship from Thiess
- Must be fluent in the English language
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work is primarily performed in an office environment, with prolonged periods of sitting, typing, and viewing a computer screen.
- May occasionally require standing, walking, or lifting objects weighing up to 25 lbs such as files, laptop equipment, or office supplies.
- Must have adequate vision, hearing, and hand–eye coordination to perform computer and phone-based work effectively.
- Occasional travel to project sites, meetings, or training may be required, which can involve driving or extended periods of sitting.
- When visiting operational sites, the employee must comply with all site safety requirements and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
- Must be physically capable of safely performing the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
