Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)Manager, Systems Engineering
The Manager, Systems Engineering manages the functional department responsible for overall systems design on projects and bids. This involves the development and management of requirement specifications and designs at the system or subsystem level, operational analysis, and preparation of system databases including guideway data. Additionally, the role includes maintaining the systems design and requirements development process, while providing technical advice to the Director of Systems Engineering.
The individual will address major challenges such as ensuring compliance with customer specifications, resolving unexpected technical problems, and maximizing the re-use of existing designs to minimize risk and maximize efficiency.
Key Accountabilities:
Foster a Performance-Driven Organization and Culture:
Assess, measure, and reward accountability and efficiency.
Set and manage SMART and quantitative objectives for team members.
Drive activities including Talent Review, Succession Planning, Developmental Discussions, and training initiatives.
Ensure task assignments balance work demand and capacity, addressing labor forecast challenges, and driving a one-team spirit within the Urban Rail Signaling domain.
Management Responsibilities:
Develop, train, and motivate team members to ensure adequate expertise is available for design/requirements development.
Mentor and coach team leads and work package managers.
Oversee department hiring, training plans, and professional development activities.
Establish and maintain structured Systems Design processes aligned with industry norms, customer requirements, and best practices.
Manage medium- and long-term resource planning, budget allocation, and scheduling for system design initiatives.
Technical Responsibilities:
Provide technical marketing support, review specifications, and assist with preparing proposals and budgets.
Ensure delivery of high-quality, safe systems and update processes based on root-cause analyses.
Represent the company in technical committees and keep abreast of railway signaling developments.
Promote product re-use and ensure its correct implementation.
Safety Responsibilities:
Establish and maintain a work environment where product safety is paramount and promote a strong safety culture among staff.
Identify and resolve safety-related defects early in the design process.
Key Requirements:
Over 10 years of technical/project experience in critical control systems.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
Detailed knowledge of Railway Operating Rules and practices.
Proven ability to address and resolve new and complex system design issues.
Strong technical writing skills and interpersonal communication abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degrees or certifications relevant to this role.
Additional technical or industry-specific expertise beyond the key requirements.

Salary Range: $130,400 - $165,500
