We invite suitable candidates to apply for the Manager, Science Writer role with our Communications and Publicity team to support the College of Computing and Data Science by transforming complex research, technical advances, and academic initiatives into clear, accurate, and engaging content for diverse audiences.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Science Communications
Develop and execute a science communications strategy aligned with the College’s research, innovation, and engagement priorities.
Position the College’s research strengths, impact, and thought leadership in computing, data science, AI, and interdisciplinary domains.
Advise College leadership on messaging, narratives, and communication approaches for research-related initiatives.
Content Leadership & Development
Lead the development of high-impact content including:
Research and impact features
Strategic reports and research highlights
Grant and programme impact narratives
Media-ready stories and thought leadership pieces
Ensure content is accurate, accessible, and aligned with institutional branding and tone.
Provide editorial oversight for all science-related communications produced by the College.
Faculty & Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as a key liaison with faculty members, research centres, and institutes to identify strategic storytelling opportunities.
Work closely with senior academics to shape complex ideas into clear and compelling narratives for external audiences.
Coordinate with central communications, advancement, research offices, and external partners on joint initiatives.
Project Management
Oversee content planning, timelines, and resource allocation across multiple projects.
Establish editorial standards, workflows, and best practices for science communications.
Institutional & External Support
Support leadership communications, including speeches, talking points, briefings, and strategic narratives.
Contribute to submissions related to rankings, awards, major grants, and institutional reporting.
Global Scientific Engagement & Event Management
Identify and shortlist potential speakers globally based on expertise and relevance.
Initiate outreach, negotiate terms, and confirm participation.
Coordinate speaker logistics (travel, accommodation, honorarium, technical requirements).
Ensure smooth delivery of sessions, including contingency planning.
Facilitate networking opportunities for participants.
Requirements:
At least a Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Computing, Data Science, Communications, Journalism, or a related discipline; postgraduate qualification preferred.
At least 7 years of experience in science communication, research communications, technical writing, or related fields.
Experience working in academic, research, or research-intensive environments is strongly preferred.
Proven ability to lead and execute strategic science communications initiatives.
Strong editorial judgment and ability to synthesise complex technical content.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience advising senior stakeholders.
Strong project management and people management capabilities.
Ability to work across disciplines and manage competing priorities in a complex organisation.
