Compensation Range
$72,200 - $110,000

Purpose

The Food Safety Program Manager (FSPM) provides proactive food safety leadership and implements Sysco's Global Support Center (GSC) food safety strategy at assigned operating sites (1-4, based on risk and complexity). This role oversees the execution of the food safety system, including policies, procedures, programs, and training. The FSPM is the lead for product recalls, regulatory inspections, GFSI and customer audits, food defense, and customer communication on food safety issues. This position partners with various stakeholders at the site, region, and market levels to drive continuous improvement in food safety KPIs. The FSPM reports directly to a GSC Field Director, Food Safety, with a dotted line to the Operating Site Regional President.

Responsibilities

  • Preventive Controls Program Management: Lead the execution of the Food Safety Preventive Controls Program, including HACCP, prerequisite programs, food safety policies, and SOPs. Conduct verification activities and food safety observations of key role colleagues (e.g., Receivers, Selectors, Drivers, Sanitation). Provide coaching and feedback.
  • Audit and Inspection Management: Manage Sysco's participation in GFSI audits (e.g., BRC), third-party audits, customer audits, and internal audits. Analyze results, determine root causes, develop corrective action plans, and review results with the Field Food Safety Director. Serve as the primary site contact during regulatory inspections and defend Sysco's food safety controls. Respond to non-compliances with corrective actions and preventive measures, escalating issues as needed. Maintain required documentation.
  • Customer Complaint Resolution: Follow up on customer food safety complaints and communicate resolutions to stakeholders. Serve as the food safety customer lead for product complaints with potential food safety issues and support the claims process.
  • Recall and Food Defense Management: Oversee the product recall process and ensure timely communication and execution. Conduct vulnerability assessments and develop mitigations for the Food Defense Program. Complete Regulatory Visit Reports and document corrective actions for non-conformances.
  • Food Safety Culture and Training: Lead the implementation of the site-level food safety culture program, including awareness activities and culture assessments. Deliver and track food safety training for key role colleagues and supervisors. Support Academy training for relevant roles.
  • Sanitation and Pest Management Oversight: Oversee the site-level Sanitation Program, including training and compliance monitoring. Verify food safety capabilities of third-party warehouses, carriers, and service providers. Oversee the integrated Pest Management Program, review records, conduct site inspections, and address pest issues.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule subject to business need specifically early mornings and weekends as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Quality Assurance/Control, Research & Development, Food Production/Operations, Supply Chain, or related discipline.
  • Knowledge of product traceability.
  • Understanding of Food Safety regulations, laws, and best practices including those from SFCR and CFIA provincial/local entities.
  • Five years or more meat and/or seafood industry (as appropriate) FSQA Leadership experience at a federal CFIA/FDA meat and/or seafood processing plant.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Food Science, Animal Science, Biological Science or related) from four-year college or University (Master’s degree or higher preferred)
  • Technical proficiency in the areas of food safety, food microbiology, food chemistry, animal science, biology, food defense, bacteriology, food processing technologies, and food regulations & policy.
  • SQF Practitioner or equivalent GFSI scheme experience, Meat and/or Seafood HACCP Certified (as appropriate)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations in English.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, policies and procedures, as well as effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of associates, managers, customers, and suppliers.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, as well as have ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to create and interpret graphs. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Intermediate proficiency in the use of a variety of PC software including all Microsoft products
  • Incumbent must demonstrate ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, as well as have ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
