Title: Manager, Engineering - Payments AI/ML Foundation

Payments is key for any healthy marketplace, and is just as central to our product at Airbnb. The Payments org at Airbnb is responsible for everything related to settling money in Airbnb’s global marketplace and makes the Payment experience as delightful, magical, intuitive, and easy as possible. At the Payments modeling team, our goal is to empower the mission by introducing intelligences and personalizations that optimize Airbnb’s massive daily transaction volume to best collect payments from guests, distribute payouts to hosts while preventing fraudulent transactions from happening.

The Difference You Will Make:

As the Engineering Manager for the Payments AI/ML Foundation team, you’ll transform fragmented AI experiments into a robust, unified platform for product teams. You’ll define and drive the AI Platform/Ops strategy, setting standards in serving, orchestration, evaluation, and governance—making AI features safe, compliant, and efficient. By standardizing practices, you’ll accelerate delivery and elevate the quality of AI at Airbnb.

 

A Typical Day: 

• Set direction and priorities, balancing platform generalization and domain-specific needs
• Guide technical decisions, ensuring scalable, multi-tenant platform components
• Raise the bar for AI Ops, improving SLOs, incident management, and system observability
• Lead and mentor engineers, fostering a high-performing, motivated team
• Communicate impact through clear updates on platform adoption and reliability

 

Your Expertise:

• 7–10+ years of software engineering experience, with 3–5+ years in leadership or tech lead roles
• Proven success building and operating production backend/infrastructure/ML systems
• Strong product mindset and stakeholder communication skills
• Hands-on experience with LLMs, AI Observability, and AI Ops is highly desired
• Excellent collaborator and influencer across teams
