Organizational Overview:

Synchrony's Risk Team provides independent oversight of Synchrony’s risk-taking activities to ensure safety and soundness, meet regulatory and legal requirements, and manage risks to the risk-appetite of the Board. Risk is responsible for independently assessing, quantifying, and overseeing risks & providing effective challenge. Risk serves as Synchrony’s Second Line of Defense.   

Overall, Risk Team oversees and manages the Risk Program to support the business in anticipating and addressing risks, issues and challenges. Results are consistent with the respective strategic uses and complying with related overall risk, risk testing policies, standards, procedures as well as regulations. Our Risk organization consists of 4 pillars: Compliance, Credit & Financial Risk, Enterprise Risk and Operational Risk. Each of the pillars play a vital role in managing Risk and supports the business in anticipating and addressing risks, issues, and challenges.
 

Role Summary/Purpose:

This role will be responsible for supporting Synchrony's Risk Data Governance Management program and process through the ongoing oversight of Synchrony’s Data Management components (Data Architecture, Data Quality, Data Governance, Data Sourcing & Data Usage). It is an individual contributor role and the selected candidate is required to provide an independent review and monitoring of the risks being taken, the assessment of risk and the effectiveness of controls relative to our Policy, Standards and Risk Appetite Statement, continuous quality improvements and consistency across Synchrony.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform Independent review of data ingestion and data architecture controls for data management platforms (Cloud, Data Lake & Data Warehouse).

  • Review data processing, data provisioning controls and data models for the products/services being reviewed.

  • Conduct quarterly oversight of Data Governance (DG) and Data Quality (DQ) policies to ensure effective control design and consistent implementation across systems and data warehouses

  • Works closely with product owners, scrum master, and data architects to convey technical design risk impacts.

  • Coordinate with data engineers and API developers to identify/mitigate risks to drive program delivery.

  • Benchmark and debug critical issues with algorithms and software as they arise.

  • Proactively propose, initiate, execute and own strategic projects that create business impact.

  • Collaborate effectively with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment, clear communication, and timely project delivery.

  • Extract and analyze data from multiple warehouse platforms for independent risk assessments and reporting.

  • Perform continuous oversight and automated monitoring of data management metrics across systems and warehouses.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience in the credit card, financial services, or technology industries, or in lieu of a degree 5+ years of experience in the credit card, financial services, or technology industries.

  • 2+ years of experience in a Data Engineering or Data Warehouse environment.

  • Must have 2+ years of experience with debugging Ab Initio Graphs.

  • Must have 2+ years of experience in RDBMS, Enterprise Data Lake/Big Data Platforms, SAS, Collibra, SQL, Python and Linux/Unix technologies.

  • Good understanding of Enterprise data governance and data  framework.

  • Must have experience with design, development and deployment in the specified technologies.

  • Proven ability to work with senior leadership teams and manage multiple priorities concurrently.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Desired Skills/Knowledge:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in root cause analysis or risk assessment.

  • Experience working in a highly regulated environment with compliance and audit focus.

  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and maintain high ethical standards.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of driving change and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

  • Very good understanding of Data warehousing concepts (Star schema, Dimensional modeling).

  • Background in working within regulated financial services environments focusing on risk, compliance, and audit standards.

Eligibility Criteria:

Bachelor's degree with 3+ years of experience in the credit card, financial services, or technology industries, or in lieu of a degree 5+ years of experience in the credit card, financial services, or technology industries.

Work Timings:

This role qualifies for Enhanced Flexibility and Choice offered in Synchrony India and will require the incumbent to be available between 06:00 AM Eastern Time – 11:30 AM Eastern Time (timings are anchored to US Eastern hours and will adjust twice a year locally). This window is for meetings with India and US teams. The remaining hours will be flexible for the employee to choose. Exceptions may apply periodically due to business needs.
