This role leads the Personal Lines Compliance team, ensuring regulatory compliance while enabling business growth and speed to market. The manager serves as a partner to the business, overseeing regulatory strategy, filings, audits, and examinations to achieve strategic priorities, while building and leading a high performing compliance organization. The role operates with significant autonomy and independent decision making authority.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead day‑to‑day operations of the Personal Lines Compliance team, including workload planning, staffing, training, and performance management
  • Foster a strong compliance culture by educating the team on how compliance supports Markel’s broader business objectives

Regulatory Strategy & Filings

  • Develop plans to implement strategy; interpret state laws; oversee all forms, rates, rules, and product compliance reviews; resolve complex regulatory issues.

Forms & Research Governance

  • Direct development and accuracy of generic and state‑specific forms; oversee/ develop research plans; ensure alignment between filed content and internal guidance

Audits & External Relationships

  • Lead market conduct exams, regulatory audits, and partner audits; oversee complaints; maintain strong relationships with regulators and key stakeholders.

Operations, Budget & Vendors

  • Manage compliance budgets and vendors; approve expenses; drive process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least 2 years of direct team management experience
  • Insurance certifications or industry affiliations preferred
  • 7+ years of experience in regulatory compliance or related external roles
  • Insurance industry experience required; Property & Casualty preferred

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
