Manager, Cloud Engineering

The Cloud Engineering Manager will lead the design, delivery, and optimization of QuartzBio’s secure, scalable cloud infrastructure that powers our data‑driven SaaS solutions for life sciences customers. This role oversees a team of cloud engineers, driving best practices in automation, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency across our AWS environments to support enterprise-grade biomarker and sample data management workflows.

At its core, this role ensures QuartzBio’s cloud platforms are resilient, compliant, and engineered for scale as we expand our solutions and customer base. By guiding technical strategy, mentoring engineering talent, and implementing modern cloud and DevOps practices, the Cloud Engineering Manager enables faster, more reliable product delivery—ultimately ensuring sponsors can securely connect, manage, and derive insights from biospecimen, assay, and clinical data.

Main Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Lead and manage the Cloud Engineering team, providing technical direction, mentoring, and performance development to drive engineering excellence.
  • Oversee the design, architecture, and implementation of secure, scalable AWS cloud infrastructure supporting QuartzBio’s SaaS platform.
  • Direct the development and maintenance of Terraform-based IaC, ensuring modularity, reusability, and consistent environment provisioning.
  • Design, implement, and refine Kubernetes (EKS) deployment strategies using Helm, ensuring reliability and efficiency across environments.
  • Optimize and govern CI/CD pipelines in GitLab, improving automation, deployment efficiency, and integration with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with Engineering, QA, and Product teams to standardize tooling, deployment practices, and operational processes.
  • Identify, prioritize, and drive automation and process improvements across infrastructure, deployments, and cloud operations to enhance reliability and reduce manual effort.
  • Maintain strong working knowledge of modern cloud engineering practices, including tooling, source control, and integration patterns, to guide technical decision‑making and ensure alignment across the team.
  • Provide hands‑on coaching and mentorship to team members, supporting skill development, career growth, and high‑quality execution.
  • Lead and manage a functional cloud engineering team, establishing clear expectations, allocating work, and ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in CloudOps/DevOps, focused on building and managing scalable cloud infrastructure and automation.
  • Proven expereince in AWS services and Terraform, with strong proficiency in Infrastructure‑as‑Code practices.
  • Hands-on experience with container orchestration using Kubernetes/EKS and Helm Charts for application deployment and lifecycle management.
  • Proven experience working with CI/CD pipelines, especially using GitLab, Docker, and Kubernetes integrations.
  • At least 2 years of people leadership experience, including coaching engineers, providing technical direction, and managing team performance and execution.
  • 2–4 years of experience in stakeholder‑facing roles, including leading projects and translating technical requirements into actionable engineering plans.
  • Strong leadership, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to set priorities, guide team execution, and influence cross-functional partners.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex infrastructure and deployment challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships with customers and internal stakeholders, including understanding and optimizing end‑to‑end workflows.
  • Skill in supervising, developing, and coaching employees, fostering a high‑performance culture and supporting career growth.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into accessible language for diverse audiences, enabling clarity in decision‑making and stakeholder alignment.
  • Experience collaborating with customers and vendors to define expectations, ensure alignment, and support successful delivery outcomes.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies: 

  • Deep knowledge of AWS cloud architecture, including networking, compute, storage, security, and best practices for scalable, enterprise-grade environments.
  • Expertise in Infrastructure‑as‑Code using Terraform, with the ability to design modular, reusable, and secure IaC patterns.
  • Strong proficiency with Kubernetes/EKS, Helm, and microservices deployment patterns, with a focus on reliability and performance.
  • Advanced CI/CD skills, particularly with GitLab, including pipeline optimization, automated testing integrations, and secure deployment strategies.
  • Strong scripting and automation abilities (e.g., Python, Bash) with a mindset for building scalable, repeatable workflows.
  • Competency in cloud security principles, including IAM, secrets management, compliance, and secure-by-design engineering.
  • Leadership and people management skills, including coaching, mentoring, and building high‑performing engineering teams.
  • Excellent systems thinking and problem‑solving ability, capable of diagnosing complex infrastructure, deployment, and reliability issues.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence crossfunctional teams, drive alignment, and clearly articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to drive continuous improvement, identifying opportunities to enhance automation, observability, cost efficiency, and operational maturity while guiding the team through successful implementation.
