Maintenance Tradesperson (Mechanical)

Melbourne Airport Victoria Full time

We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Tradesperson (Mechanical) to support the reliability and performance of our automated sortation systems and depot equipment on the PM shift (15:44 – 23:50).

This is a hands-on, critical role focused on maintaining high system availability in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment. You will play a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of automated equipment through preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance, responding quickly to breakdowns and contributing to continuous improvement across the site.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Undertake all planned maintenance activities on automated sortation systems and freight-handling equipment, including preventative, predictive, corrective, and project-related engineering works.

  • Rapidly identify and rectify mechanical or automation faults during unforeseen breakdowns to minimise downtime.

  • Ensure critical system components are repaired promptly to maintain operational continuity.

  • Ensure strict adherence to maintenance schedules and best-practice maintenance procedures.

Systems & Asset Management

  • Effectively utilise and maintain the Computerised Maintenance Management System (MEX), ensuring accurate recording of work orders and maintenance activities.

  • Maintain critical spare parts in an organised and readily accessible manner.

  • Ensure all tools and equipment are maintained in safe working order.

Operational Support & Collaboration

  • Support operational personnel in the correct usage and care of systems and equipment.

  • Maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with peers, supervisors, and operational teams.

  • Contribute to project engineering activities, system upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Operational Performance & Excellence

  • Assist in the design of innovative system and facility solutions to meet evolving business and operational needs.

  • Support the development and implementation of system improvements.

  • Assist in developing and refining maintenance procedures and schedules to improve system reliability and performance.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in the maintenance and repair of complex industrial automation systems.

  • General knowledge of carton and package handling conveyor systems.

  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings and schematics.

  • Hands-on experience with conveying equipment, hydraulics, and pneumatics.

  • Proficiency in using computerised maintenance management systems (MEX or similar).

  • Demonstrated ability to participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Capital project experience.

  • Experience in the freight or intralogistics industry is highly desirable.

Qualifications

  • Mechanical Engineering Trade Certificate or Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (TAFE or equivalent).

  • Electrical Connect/Disconnect qualification (desirable).

  • Current Driver’s Licence.
