ROLE OVERVIEW

Thiess is accepting applications for the role of Maintenance Superintendent located in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for the delivery of safe, efficient, reliable and cost-managed assets to our operation. They will be required to provide direction to the maintenance staff and will be responsible for all areas of asset and maintenance management, including but not limited to maintaining a safe and efficient workplace, completing planned and unplanned maintenance events, asset availability/reliability, warehousing/inventory and financial management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure asset availability and reliability of mining fleet meet or exceed the needs of the project while being executed in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Assist the Project Manager in implementing Safety and Environmental Plans to maintain compliance in accordance to all the relevant legislation and internal standards.
  • Constantly look to identify hazards and risks through regular inspections, audits, behavioural observations, JSEO’s as per HSE targets and review team member JSEO’s, where required, take corrective actions.
  • Assist in the Project Manager in the development and management of the annual budget as well as monthly budgets and reviews. Promote prosperous healthy client relationships to network and identify new business opportunities.
  • Identify project-based opportunities to improve equipment reliability and reduce maintenance costs by eliminating repetitive, costly, or low-value work.
  • Lead, coach and develop team members by setting clear expectations, monitoring performance and mentoring team members.
  • Provide clear performance expectations to personnel and subcontractors and reinforce correct behaviour through recognition and encouragement as well as application of timely disciplinary procedures.
  • Ensure down day activities are monitored for quality, effectiveness and compliance to Thiess standards while encouraging the concept of continual improvement with the workforce.
  • Review and audit mechanical repairs and services to ensure compliance with the mechanical maintenance scheme and the Thiess Management System (TMS).
  • Play an active role in all incident investigations to ensure the root causes are identified and that all the required documentation is reported, if applicable, implement corrective actions in consultation with relevant parties.
  • Ensure maintenance activities on the mobile plant deliver quality outcomes. Monitor backlog for the maintenance function and implement suitable strategies to ensure it remains within acceptable levels.
  • Supervise the updating and implementation of maintenance related operational procedures and work instructions.
  • Ensure all unsafe equipment is taken out of service in a timely manner.
  • Work in compliance at all times with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including participation in risk assessments, adherence to safe work practices and reporting hazards as per the Internal Responsibility System.
  • Contribute positively to a respectful work environment in compliance with the Code of Conduct and the Healthy, Safe and Respectful Workplace policy
  • Work in compliance with all policies and procedures and the Employee Handbook
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Strong ability and experience to grow, lead and support a multidisciplinary maintenance team
  • Demonstrated high level of analytical ability and ability to problem solve
  • High level of attention to detail and excellent follow-up skills
  • Professional and able to work with the leadership team to drive project outcomes
  • Excellent planning, leadership, organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Substantial experience with Mobile Plant maintenance in an open cut mining environment
  • Complete understanding of maintenance planning and condition monitoring

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of Generic First Line Supervisor Common Core – Program #770141 (Surface Mining)
  • 10+ Years of mining or heavy industrial construction experience considered an asset
  • 5-year minimum experience as a manager, supervisor, or planner
  • JDE or equivalent ERP system proficiency preferred
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Speaks clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills leading and motivating staff as well as effectively communicating with all levels of management and professionals internally and externally
  • Must be fluent in the English language
  • Authorization to work lawfully in Canada without sponsorship from Thiess is required

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Mechanical Engineering Degree and/or Journeyman ticket plus relevant industry experience
  • Asset and maintenance management degree – highly considered

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Currently based out of the Stobie Open Pit Mine in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada
  • Schedule: Monday to Friday; working outside of core hours and weekends as needed to meet operational requirements
  • Occasional local travel as needed
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle
