The Maintenance Superintendent – Outside Plumbing/Utilities is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the maintenance, repair, and operation of all plumbing and utility systems that serve campus buildings at Louisiana State University. This position provides technical oversight and leadership to a team of plumbers, pipefitters, and plumbing masters who maintain domestic water, natural gas, steam, and chilled water distribution systems, as well as other plumbing-related utilities. The superintendent ensures that all plumbing and utility systems operate efficiently, reliably, and in compliance with applicable codes, environmental regulations, and safety standards. This position plays a key role in preventive maintenance planning, project coordination, and emergency response for more than 300 campus buildings encompassing over 11 million square feet, along with an extensive network of underground tunnels and utility distribution systems. The incumbent works under the general direction of the Facility Assistant Maintenance Manager B, coordinating closely with other facilities disciplines to support the university’s mission through safe, sustainable, and dependable building operations.
Job Responsibilities
Maintains and repairs campus piping and utility distribution systems, including sanitary sewer, storm sewer, steam, natural gas, domestic water, and chilled water systems. These utilities are located in underground tunnels, trenches, and direct-buried installations and are constructed from a variety of materials such as copper, cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, galvanized steel, PVC, and terracotta. - 30%
Supervises and directs all activities related to plumbing operations, including response to facility plumbing emergencies, routine maintenance and repairs, and new plumbing installations. Oversees and participates in the repair, adjustment, and calibration of control valves and related components for the campus steam, hot water, and chilled water distribution systems. This includes work on piping systems, pressure-regulating devices, pneumatic and electric valve actuators, steam traps, drip legs, and associated equipment. Additionally, assists with major installations such as air handling units, fan coil units, boilers, and other mechanical systems to ensure proper connection and function of plumbing and utility services. -30%
Responsible for maintaining the quality and safety of the campus domestic water supply in compliance with the Louisiana Administrative Code (LAC) Title 51 – Public Health Sanitary Code. Duties include obtaining and maintaining certification for testing and repairing backflow prevention systems, performing regular inspections and testing of existing devices, and verifying the proper installation and operation of all newly installed backflow prevention systems across campus.-25%
Performs administrative and supervisory duties, including but not limited to preparing work schedules, approving time, managing overtime requirements, and administering disciplinary actions as needed. Plans and prioritizes work assignments to ensure efficient use of labor and resources. Prepares working drawings and interprets engineering blueprints and specifications for assigned maintenance and construction projects to ensure proper execution and compliance with design standards. -10%
Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements for the campus natural gas distribution system as mandated by Federal regulations and the Louisiana Administrative Code. Maintains proper documentation, testing, and inspection records to verify compliance and system safety. Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of Facilities Services.-5%

Minimum Qualifications
Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:
Four years of experience in the building construction trades; maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment; building construction; building maintenance; or construction, maintenance, or repair of roads or bridges; OR
Completion of a two-year vocational technical program in general building construction, construction technology, or engineering plus two years of experience in the building construction trades; maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment; building construction; building maintenance; or construction, maintenance, or repair of roads or bridges; OR
Twelve semester hours in construction management, construction technology, engineering, or any combination of these courses plus two years of experience in the building construction trades; maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment; building construction; building maintenance; or construction, maintenance, or repair of roads or bridges.
