Job Title: Grounds Superintendent (Baseball Stadium)

Compensation: Salary range $75,000–$100,000 Annual based on experience
Position Summary:
The Grounds Superintendent is responsible for the overall care, maintenance, and professional presentation of the stadium’s natural grass baseball field and surrounding grounds. This includes developing and executing turf management programs, overseeing field preparation for all games and events, managing weather-related protocols, supervising grounds crew staff, and ensuring adherence to safety and compliance standards. The role requires collaboration with stadium departments and leadership to support seamless stadium operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Field & Turf Management
- Plan and implement a comprehensive turf maintenance program (mowing, aeration, irrigation, fertilization, pest control)
- Maintain the infield skin, warning track, bullpens, pitcher’s mound, batter’s box, and dugouts to professional baseball standards
- Monitor soil health, pH levels, drainage, and compaction; adjust as necessary
- Ensure consistent field dimensions, lip-free transitions, and visual excellence
Game & Event Preparation
- Prepare field for all games, practices, and special events (concerts, exhibitions, community functions)
- Handle field lining, mound and plate setup, watering, base installation, and other game-day tasks
- Deploy and manage tarp systems during inclement weather; communicate field conditions with stakeholders
- Remain available during events to address urgent field adjustments or repairs
Staff Leadership & Development
- Hire, supervise, train, and schedule grounds crew and seasonal workers
- Enforce safety practices, conduct performance evaluations, and foster a culture of professionalism and precision
- Provide ongoing training in equipment use and field procedures
Equipment & Inventory Oversight
- Maintain all turf equipment, irrigation systems, and field infrastructure in safe working order
- Track inventory and order supplies (fertilizer, grass seed, paint, etc.) in alignment with budget
- Coordinate with Stadium Operations on capital equipment planning and procurement
Safety, Compliance & Sustainability
- Enforce OSHA, league, and environmental compliance standards
- Promote sustainable practices (e.g., water conservation, eco-friendly turf products)
- Maintain records of field conditions, maintenance logs, inspections, and repairs
Collaboration & Communication
- Coordinate with stadium departments including operations, concessions, events, and security
- Provide regular updates on field conditions, project timelines, and staffing to senior management
- Attend planning meetings to align on scheduling, logistics, and priorities
Qualifications:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or certification in Turfgrass Science, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field preferred
- 5+ years of experience in sports turf management, preferably with baseball field specialization
- 2+ years in a supervisory or managerial role with hands-on team leadership
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, and sports field construction
- Expertise in baseball-specific field preparation and clay management
- Proficiency with maintenance equipment (mowers, tractors, aerators)
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to troubleshoot field or equipment issues under pressure
Certifications
- SFMA Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM) preferred or willingness to obtain within 18 months
- Valid pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Flexible availability required, including nights, weekends, and holidays
