Job Description:

What’s the role

The Engineer – Maintenance (Electrical) and Engineer – Maintenance (Instrumentation) roles involve end‑to‑end work planning for preventive and corrective maintenance activities across electrical and instrumentation systems in oil and gas, refinery, and petrochemical environments. Responsibilities include preparing comprehensive work packs and task lists for equipment such as switchgear, battery systems, substations, field instruments, Analyzer instruments, PLC/DCS control systems, and other related assets by studying OEM manuals, general and equipment‑specific task lists, test certificates, maintenance reports, spare part lists, and preventive maintenance strategies. Both roles require strong technical understanding—ranging from electrical wiring, circuits, transmission/operation at HV/LV voltage level and components to instrumentation and control systems—as well as familiarity with industry‑specific equipment and machinery.

They support maintenance and reliability engineers from initial response and assessment through prioritization, troubleshooting, proposing virtual technical solutions, coordinating stakeholder discussions, conducting risk assessments, ensuring QA/QC, maintaining proper documentation, and completing final job closure to enable high equipment reliability and overall plant technical availability.

What you’ll be doing

  • Prepare and develop comprehensive work plans and work packs using calibration reports, maintenance reports, equipment‑specific task lists, spare part lists, drawings (P&IDs, SLDs, schematics, loop diagrams), circuit diagrams, instrument logic, cause‑and‑effect diagrams, equipment data sheets, and OEM O&M manuals for field instruments, analyzer instruments, control systems, electrical switchgear, HV/LV transformers, and related E&I equipment across various Shell operating units.
  • Develop detailed maintenance plans aligned with HSSE and Safe Work Practices, covering materials, manpower, work sequencing, rental equipment, tools, and requisitioning; and build work packs with complete task descriptions, required parts/tools, estimated time, task relationships, and pre‑work preparation steps for all electrical and instrumentation scopes.
  • Plan and manage SAP work orders, including building library work packs for time‑based, condition‑based, and breakdown maintenance; preparing parts and service requirements; estimating cost and duration; performing network mapping; and defining quality checkpoints for minimum assurance tasks.
  • Drive work preparation quality, accuracy, and productivity by reviewing all E&I work packages, registering/distributing work, handling additional/less work, supporting departmental integration, and optimizing work preparation processes.
  • Conduct job hazard assessments and risk evaluations—including JHA, HRA, HAZID—prepare Permits to Work, determine system conditions, and identify shutdown windows or maintenance opportunities to ensure safe and efficient work execution.
  • Perform diagnostics and maintenance analysis, including first‑level damage history review, failure mode identification based on anomaly reports, CM/PM request analysis, and preparation of detailed work orders with procedures, sketches, specifications, and essential drawings.
  • Ensure readiness of resources and support execution by verifying availability of special tools, materials, and services; customizing OEM work packs into site‑specific versions; and collaborating with site maintenance leads, OEMs, and vendors to update and refine work packs as required.
  • Plan and anticipate mandatory spares and manpower for instruments, electrical equipment, control valves, level instruments, and damper equipment, using maintenance manuals and vendor information; and coordinate with site focal points for Preventive Maintenance Libraries and maintenance strategies across operating units.
  • Utilize technical expertise and data analysis to interpret engineering drawings (P&IDs, SLDs, PEFS, PFDs, schematics, loops, interlocks, control logic), identify and resolve process bottlenecks, maintain issue logs, and implement improvements across E&I maintenance planning processes.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with Engineering, Supply Chain, Scheduling, and maintenance teams to support field execution; initiate purchase requisitions; validate material masters and BOMs; understand manhour estimation (HOTT, global norms); ensure regulatory compliance; manage contracts, documents, service entries, and EFAs; and apply work clustering and scheduling using Primavera for shutdown and multi‑discipline scopes.

What you bring

  • Degree in Engineering in Electrical, Electronics & Instrumentation / Instrumentation & Control Engineering / E&C discipline.
  • (E&I) Minimum 2 - 10 years of hand-on field experience in Field Instrumentation, analyzer Instruments, PLCs, DCS and electrical systems and automation systems in Oil & Gas / Refinery / Petrochemicals / Equivalent Industry and in one or more of following areas.
  • (Electrical) Minimum 5 plus years of a solid understanding of electrical systems, including wiring, circuits, and electrical components. Familiarity with the equipment and machinery used in the specific industry is crucial. Hands on experience in electrical systems in Oil & Gas / Refinery / Petrochemicals / Equivalent Industry and in one or more of following areas.
  • Hands-on experience in Installation & commissioning/operations, maintenance/design, engineering & selection of instruments and electrical equipment for heavy rotating equipment such as turbines, engines, compressors, and centrifugal pumps, as well as maintenance of both instrumentation and electrical systems for static equipment including columns, safety valves, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, heaters, boilers, and other relevant field and electrical equipment.
  • Experience in preparing the maintenance work instructions, task lists, work packs, work preparation and manpower estimation for PM/CM/major maintenance/overhauling of instrumentation activities such as calibration, installation, stroke checking, and electrical equipment maintenance, covering various equipment available in the oil and gas industry.
  • Knowledge and experience in diagnosing the cause of the problem in field instruments, analyzer instruments, control system instruments, and electrical equipments, determining the scope of activity required to return the equipment back into service by packaging the work to the tasks, disciplines, materials, and services for effective completion; utilizing feedback from past work plan implementation to improve future work plans; carrying out root cause analysis on repeated failures; and collaborating with operations and technologists to identify process‑related degradation or failure mechanisms.
  •  Knowledge and experience in materials or resources to be ordered in advance of the work order being issued, such that the scheduler can immediately bring the work order into the schedule without any intervention and participated and supported ISO/safety‑MS audits as well as other related external audits as part of the Company Safety Control framework and management system.
  • Performed Instrument and electrical equipment condition monitoring whenever required & liaise with relevant subject matter experts/specialist/OEM to address any arising issues, problems & concerns.
