POSITION TITLE:

Mainframe Solution Architect - COBOL

    

POSITION LOCATION:

This hybrid position will either be based in Lynchburg, VA or Richmond, VA

    

YOUR ROLE

In your role as the Mainframe Solution Architect, you will support several of Genworth's top strategic priorities. The person selected will work with the various development teams and the support team for the CLOAS application.  CLOAS is a mainframe-based application and is the core Genworth system for Long Term Care Policy Administration. The CLOAS application sits at the center of all policy processing for the business and contains the data and business logic for all customer service operations. The system integrates with many peripheral systems utilizing various technologies including Web Services and MQ.  

The CLOAS team uses Agile development methodologies and is actively implementing modern tools for development and testing. It is amongst the most active Genworth systems, with multiple ongoing enhancements and upgrades to support evolving business needs.  The person selected will assist the Long-Term Care Solutions team in helping them understand how to technically slice stories based upon data/code by implementing complex business concepts into software.  

The individual needs to be proficient in providing technical support for large and complex mainframe applications.  The role will involve extensive collaboration with other developers, Business Analysts and QA members on the team as well as with Business Partners and other IT teams.  

What you will be doing

Your Responsibilities:

  • Manage all the aspects related to software engineering of the LTC CLOAS Admin system: including architecture design, development, implementation, maintenance, and support 
  • Lead Technical sessions as necessary to understand complex business needs.   
  • Ensures design solution meets coding standards, desired business outcome of acceptance criteria, does not cause unintended impact and fits within the overall technical architecture Assists support and/or project personnel in resolving complex program problems.  
  • Performs technical analysis and component code review of the solution  
  • Assessing the systems architecture currently in place and working with technical staff to recommend solutions to improve it; Stays updated on current technology trends and industry best practices 
  • Understand the impact of downtime on business processes 
  • Supports Genworth’s LTC CLOAS administration system by ensuring application controls are followed and Audit, Security and Risk Program requests are handled as part of normal operations 
  • Implement Continuous Improvement as a part of normal operations and drive change across LTC business and technology teams 
  • Continually research the current and emerging technologies and propose changes where needed  
  • Remain current on business processes and partner with business leaders to ensure system alignment 

What you bring

Required Qualifications:

  • 4-year college degree or relevant equivalent experience with strong mainframe (COBOL, JCL, CICS, IMS) programming skills and production support experience preferably in insurance/finance domain. 
  • 5+ Years experience working in the Insurance or Financial Services industry 
  • Practical knowledge of LTC insurance products and premiums 
  • 2+ Years experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum and/or Kanban) 
  • Excellent analytical skills and a detail-oriented mindset, with ability to understand complex business logic, analyze the system and data, to identify changes needed, and understand impact of changes on the various products and system functionalities. 
  • Ability to manage concurrent deadlines and multiple priorities 
  • Proven process improvement and project management skills 
  • Ability to be a strong advocate for process and technology improvement, with strong ability to influence decision makers, drive consensus and broker solutions between parties with competing or potentially conflicting requirements.  Ability to make decisions to drive results that positively impact productivity, efficiency, overall customer service levels, and enhance company profitability. 
  • Experience working with an onshore-offshore model 
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from the executive leadership team and business customers at all levels 
  • Passion for innovation, continuous improvement, ability to effectively lead and drive change 
  • Advanced SQL & data analysis experience
  • Experience developing, implementing, or supporting IT controllership and audit processes 
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team environment on a complex mainframe system and having good problem-solving skills and a results-oriented outlook.  
  • A continuous improvement mindset, and willingness to adapt to new technologies and ways of working 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Practical knowledge of LTC insurance products and premiums 
  • Working knowledge of CLOAS Policy Administration System 
  • Experience in a managed services environment, managing to SLA’s and managing work queues. 
  • Experience working with an onshore-offshore model 
  • IMS database experience in an MVS and CICS environment 
  • Experience with modern mainframe development and testing tools 
  • Experience working in a multi technology environment with Mainframe and .Net 
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results by leading and influencing the work of others
