Airbus Aerosystems Kinston is looking for a Machine Operator to join our Operations department based in Kinston, NC.

Your Working Environment:
The Airbus Aerosystems Kinston facility sits at the forefront of aerospace manufacturing, specializing in the production of large, advanced composite aerostructures. Our team builds critical components for the state-of-the-art Airbus A350 XWB, including the composite center fuselage and wing spar.

Your Challenges:  

  • Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to make parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions. 

  • Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determines sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup; uses a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds; measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining; fits and assembles precision parts into mechanical equipment and determines material, parts, and equipment required. 

  • May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures. 

  • Typically requires completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.   


The Company will provide appropriate assistance in job training to enable employees to perform all necessary job functions including the following: 

  • Produce parts or assemblies using Conventional or Computerized Numerical Controlled (CNC) mediums, while simultaneously ensuring product and/or process quality at all levels of the manufacturing operation through monitoring/verification methodologies.

  • Concurrently perform related functions to provide complete hardware in accordance with engineering specifications (e.g., operating multiple machines simultaneously, deburr part surface, milling, drilling, boring, honing, grinding, fastening). 

  • Perform routine minor machine maintenance as part of their daily work duties (e.g., replacing machine filters, changing standard lightbulbs on machines and equipment, maintaining lubrication/coolant levels as related to basic Total Preventative Maintenance duties).

  •  Routinely move product within the immediate manufacturing work area, including across isle, using shop assigned equipment as required, and complete transactions necessary to move product to the next operation. On an exception basis, moves product to the next operation within a building. 

  • Support the continuous flow of product within the manufacturing process by training and assisting employees of the same or lower classification level. 

  • Trains to become MVP qualified.

  • Each employee may be asked, on occasion, to complete other duties and responsibilities as required by Spirit leadership. Training and certification will be provided for the additional work when required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Vision: Daily able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings.

  • Hearing: Daily able to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds on the production floor including safety warnings or alarms.

  • Speaking:  Daily able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications.

  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors):Rarely  able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment and some tools including production tools such as hydraulic lifts.

  • Carrying: Weekly able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.

  • Lifting:  Weekly able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.

  • Pushing / Pulling:  Several times a month able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools.

  • Sitting: Daily able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer.

  • Squatting / Kneeling:  Daily able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.

  • Standing: Daily able to stand for discussions in offices or on the production floor.

  • Travel:  Once or twice a year able to travel independently and at short notice.

  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): Daily able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces.

  • Personal Protective Equipment required:  Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Respirators/Masks, and/or Protective Gloves as required by site and/or customer site

  • Administrative position only PPE required: Steel-toed shoes are required for all shop floor visits, appropriate hearing/eye protection may also be required when visiting the shop floor.
