The listed pay range or pay rate reflects compensation for a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) position. Actual compensation may differ depending on assigned hours and position status (e.g., part-time).

Position Overview

SUMMARY (Basic Purpose of the Job)

Monitors and performs maintenance of the laboratory information system to ensure correct functionality and meeting the needs of department to ensure accurate and timely specimen processing, results and reporting under the direction of the LIS Coordinator. Implements all aspects of system requirements, including system analysis, policy and procedure documentation, test plans, system performance, and user training. Operates in a fiscally responsible manner, to achieve operation efficiency and to adhere to established policies, practices and procedures.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Bachelor's of Science degree, preferred.

Experience:

Three years lab experience and demonstrated IT experience related to LIS operation, troubleshooting, implementation and sustainability. Knowledge and experience with SCC Soft preferred.

Other Credentials:

Knowledge and Skills:

Strong knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and workflow. Strong background in IT solutions. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, initiative, resourcefulness, sound judgment.

Special Training:

Lab information system knowledge and data base build and testing experience. Proficiency in computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email and database software. Experience with project management and analytical assessment.

Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities:

Ability to multitask; capable of adhering to deadlines and expectations set for LIS projects. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains and updates the Laboratory Information System as directed. Assists with development and implementation of LIS policies and procedures. Adheres to established policies, practices and procedures to ensure accurate and timely specimen processing, results and reporting.
  • Troubleshoots, escalates and resolves technical, operational and system related problems effectively. Researches issues and communicates to leadership and technical staff effectively.
  • Engages in Change Control activity. Participates in evaluation of new technology. Tests and implements new releases system updates and corrective software patches to maintain Integrity of a lab information system. Develops, updates, modifies and monitors tables and interfaces for the laboratory information system.
  • Monitors operations and system performance for LIS systems. Performs validations and analyzes errors.
  • Performs the preparation, printing and distributing of a variety of reports and records as required. Provides timely and accurate laboratory reports as required. Creates ad hoc reports as needed. Maintains comprehensive systems documentation.
  • Communicates with superiors and serves as a liaison with hospital staff, internal and external customers. Provides timely updates to customers on the status of operations. Communicates clearly, directly and in a professional manner. Provides information/facts accurately, completely and in a timely manner.
  • Monitors automated interfaces, both instrument interfaces and interfaces with related hospital-wide computer systems, to ensure optimal accuracy, appropriate flow of data and timely turnaround of results. Reports hardware problems.
  • Participates in the orientation of staff members in computer theory, operations and functions. Maintains security access assignment based PHI on guidelines.
  • Works in collaboration with programmers and project leaders to develop clinical systems, supporting Lab/hospital information service goals, policies and procedures and recommends changes. Participates in multidisciplinary group meetings and provides clinical input.
  • Provides hands-on support to clinical staff during implementation for all shifts as needed. Participates in the development and installation of computer and software upgrades from the point of evaluation, budgeting, proposal, testing, project management, vendor execution of upgrade, quality control and acceptance.
  • Maintains current knowledge of clinical applications currently in use at CH and how they interact with the laboratory information system as well as current trends. Abides by the regulations set forth by CAP, CMS, NYDOH, CLIA, HIPPA, and other regulatory agencies. Assists with CAP inspection.
  • Performs all billing related functions efficiently. Works closely with Patient Accounts to verify accuracy of patient invoices, adds modifiers, additional charges and/or credits as necessary. Maintains the charge description master for the laboratory including CPT and LOINC code updates and the addition of new and the deletion of existing codes as needed. Evaluates, corrects, and reprocesses result and financial transactions for certain patients in a timely manner to ensure they are accurately posted in all Capital Health systems. Ensures account numbers and medical record numbers are listed accurately in the laboratory information system. Performs periodic auditing in conjunctions with Corporate Compliance to verify accuracy of physician orders, results, and charges.
  • Assists as project manager for installation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation interfaces. Provides appropriate implementation support for information system modules including workflow analysis.
  • Remains available for on-call rotation Provides hands-on support to clinical staff during implementation for all shifts as needed.
  • Monitors the back-up process for successes and failures. Seeks immediate resolution for failures encountered.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
