Job Summary

Assist in performing work involved with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal, and inspection of electrical transmission and distribution facilities; drive and operate line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment. All job duties apply to overhead and underground equipment and facilities.

What You'll Do:

Underground and overhead line work

  • Assist with assembly, installation, maintenance, removal and competent inspection of underground facilities, conductors, fixtures, structures and associated equipment on de‑energized and grounded overhead and underground systems under direct or immediate supervision.

  • Perform ground‑person duties under immediate or direct supervision as required by skill level.

  • Assist with loading, unloading, handling, installing and removing poles, towers and other structures.

Company equipment and energized work (training-based progression)

  • After completion of D‑100 (or equivalent experience), demonstrate ability to operate Company equipment (excluding digger/derricks and aerial lift vehicles), climb poles, ladders and structures, and work on de‑energized conductors and equipment. May work on conductors/equipment energized up to 260 volts under direct supervision.

  • After completion of D‑200 (or equivalent), operate digger/derrick and aerial devices under immediate supervision. Under direct supervision, may operate cutouts, line switches, reclosers, and other sectionalizing or transformer devices. Progression of supervision (direct → immediate → general) occurs as skill increases.

  • After completion of D‑300 (or equivalent), test de‑energized overhead lines and equipment and install/remove personal protective grounds under immediate supervision.

Splicing, rigging and material handling

  • Assemble and install line material and hardware under direct or immediate supervision. Use, store and inspect ropes, rigging and hand lines; tie appropriate knots.

  • Splice primary and secondary overhead wires using proper tools and hardware, including crimping and compression tools.

Tools, PPE and equipment care

  • Inspect, maintain and organize tools, equipment and company vehicles; keep work areas clean and orderly.

  • Identify, inspect and maintain all classes of rubber gloves and sleeves, insulating blankets, hoses and covers, and other insulating PPE. Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.

Rescue and work‑area protection

  • Safely execute pole‑top and bucket‑truck rescue procedures as training is completed.

  • Protect and control work areas by setting and removing barricades, flags, signs, cones and related devices.

Records and reporting

  • Maintain accurate records and submit required reports. Correctly read and record information from analog and digital kilowatt‑hour meters. Complete and submit monthly apprentice cards for supervisory review.

Other duties

  • Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.

Supervision definitions

  • Direct supervision: A qualified person is working hands‑on with the employee performing the task.

  • Immediate supervision: A qualified person is nearby, in constant visual and/or verbal contact with the employee at the work site.

  • General supervision: A higher‑classification employee knowledgeable of the task; not necessarily present at the job site.

  • Qualified person: A Line Mechanic or Supervisor who is knowledgeable of the task and capable of performing emergency rescue.

What We Are Looking For:

Education:   High school diploma or GED


Experience:  No experience required.  Line work experience or line school education is preferred.


Licenses/Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Employee shall obtain appropriate licensing as required by federal and/or state law prior to the end of the designated probationary period. Must acquire CDL beginners permit within 60 days.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


1) Must have the ability and desire to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to perform the duties and/or responsibilities of the key job (Line Mechanic A) in this family and be qualified through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.  


2) Must acquire within such time frame as determined by the Company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the next higher classification in the line of progression, or vacate the current job classification.  


3) This job requires "recommended" test results from HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout.  This assessment is completed online, is untimed, and typically takes about 45 minutes to complete. Please refer to the Employment Test Prep section of our website  https://www.aep.com/careers/testprep/

4) This role requires regular overtime and on-call response. Travel, including out of town travel, may also be required.

Hourly rate: $30.60/hr

Compensation Range:

$30.60 - $31.32

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
