Position Overview:

The Carleton College Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE) seeks a Lighten Up! Sale Operations Manager to manage the logistics of the annual Lighten Up! campus-wide garage sale in June, 2026. This position will manage the community volunteers staffing the sale, as well as the flow of cash, customers and donated inventory over the course of this large-scale community event that fills Laird Stadium. 

This position will work in close collaboration with the CCCE Associate Director for Community Impact. The position reports to the CCCE director. 

This position will work up to 40 hours/wk, though it could be negotiated to be as little as 34 hrs/wk. Must be available to work full 8-hour days.  It is an hourly, temporary position beginning June 3, 2026 and ending June 26, 2026. Hiring is contingent on a physical test of the candidate’s ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the job. 

About Lighten Up!  Each Spring Carleton College students donate approximately 25 tons of unneeded items to the Lighten Up Garage Sale. Students donate a variety of items including: clothing, winter apparel, furniture, household items, books, bedding, sport equipment, and other fun things! The sale generates tens of thousands of dollars in essential funds for community non-profits and also serves as an excellent lesson in “green” living and waste management. Lighten Up! is a collaborative initiative of the CCCE and local community nonprofits.  Learn more about the CCCE at carleton.edu/ccce.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the processing and sorting of all materials donated to the sale.
  • Schedule and manage community volunteer teams
  • Manage item receiving area, pace, and sorting process
  • Address customer service questions and issues

Supervision Received and Exercised: 

  • Is supervised by the Center for Community and Civic Engagement Director.
  • Supervises teams of community volunteers and student workers, about 30 per day. 

Education/Experience/Skills: 

Required: 

  • Highly organized
  • Clear, effective oral communicator 
  • Excellent on-the-fly problem solver who works well under pressure
  • Have good people skills
  • Must be available throughout June, including Saturdays. Key sale dates include June 13, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21.
  • This is a physical role. Requires frequent lifting of average weight objects and occasional lifting of 30 - 50 pound objects. 
  • Work occurs in a stadium environment with no air conditioning.

Preferred: 

  • Experience with event planning
  • Experience with retail or resale
  • Experience managing volunteers

Physical Requirements:

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
